If you're like me and want the best possible story, Xenosaga 1-3, Tales of the Abyss, and FFX are the way to go. If you can wade through the battle system on Xenosaga 2 you'll find the story is great and the music for 2 & 3 is absolutely incredible.

But if you want the absolutely best story you could ever experience, you need to pick up Yakuza 1 & 2. There's RPG elements, though it's really a freeroaming brawler. It's simply the best story I've ever seen in a game and I cannot overstate how much I love it.

That game had some really stupidlyannoyingAGHGHGHHH fun jumps. The gameplay is a bit on the difficult side but it just makes it that much more rewarding. Storyline is great too--it was the only game that managed to make me cry for random village npcs ;_;

shin megami tensei : noctourne (maybe spelled wrong).....this knocked ff7 off its mantle for me.

awsome game,great looking art style with a very dark story line with multiple paths and tons of hours of just customizing your party set-up....must have for any rpg fan

Since FF is a no brainer and Grandia was suggested. The only game I can recommend in my library: Dark Cloud.
