Seems '***' is an acceptable word for NPCs but what about us players. Is FFXIV's censorship one sided or is it setting the standard for our communications?

I notice that. It's weird that the community censored words (that is if you use the chat filters) are not censored for NPcs that swear like sailors.

"***, Piss, ***, ***, ***, ***, and ***", as George Carlin taught us, are swear words.

I dunno what you're referring to.

He also went on to add a whole ***load of words to that list.

how is *** even a swear word? I thought it was someone who didn't have a father? IS THERE AN ALTERNATE MEANING NOW!?

That kind of language is kinda surprising for SE, I dont think it fits FF at all, fallout sure, final fantasy, not so much. /shrug

I think some of the game developers were having a bit too much fun when they were writing the scripts. Japanese to English translation is usually done by 'native' (hate that term) English speakers so I think it possible this was the case.

That's a really good question. Even with the CAPS!!!

OK, so I will attempt to answer the question for you.

Your definition is one of the main definitions for ***. A child with no father. The implication though is that by calling someone a '***' rather than an 'only child' you want to infer the illegitimate aspect of the child. In short, you want to imply that the mother is a ***.

Other uses of '***' imply mixed heritage, mixed breeding in a degenerate manner, a person of low worth or questionable character.

You can have lucky *** in FFXIV who play the game all day long without having to work...but others would refer to them as sad ***. And then those *** NMs like Ifrit which are really difficult to handle without sentinel. And of course, once you do defeat him, the *** drops junk.

Even in these cases though, the use of *** is in a negative sense. In the case of lucky *** it would indicate envy and in the case of Ifrit, frustration with a possible tinge of anger.

Interestingly it is how these words like fvcking-A have become so common place in the language of certain societies that it seems some people have become insensitive to their negative connotations.

Thanks for asking the question. It was a good one.

@Soki

Brilliant screen captures. Thanks for posting them. The language use is actually a lot worse than I thought.

Absolutely!

So, why can't I name my bazaar *** '***' without some GM coming up and telling me to rename them?

Yeah there's a definite double standard. They should either dispense with the act and just call it M for mature due to language or go back to FFVII and use !@(*!#$%(*

I think it just fits the times that 14 is in. More realistic! Plus it's funny!

Lord of the Rings reworked:

Gandalf: They are one; the ring and that *** Dark Lord. Frodo, he must never find it or we'll all be forced to hide our sticky stains of embarrassment.
Frodo: [gets up to hide the ring] All right. We'll put it away. We'll keep it hidden from those pox-faced ***. No one knows it's here, do they?
[Gandalf doesn't answer]
Frodo: Do they, Gandalf? (mutters)... deaf son of a ***...

I always saw FF as a bit like LOTR. Certainly could have a lot of fun reworking LOTR.
