Hey y'all, I'm putting together my WAR gearsets so I have goals to shoot for, and I was wondering what the prevailing thoughts were regarding Sword Strap. I'm mainly considering situations with capped magic haste (Embrava, SV Marches) because that's where the Sword Strap's small bit of speed will shine the brightest.

Edit: most of the below is wrong, see Raen's.

My thinking is that if 256/1024 gear haste, 43.75% magic haste, and Hasso's JA haste give WAR 78.71% delay reduction (FFXI calculator values), getting that last 1.29% could really have an impact worth considering. 21.29% (remaining delay with capped magic/gear haste + Hasso) / 20% (minimum delay) = 6.45% reduction in delay. Not a bad contribution from the Grip slot.

What's more, I've had trouble finding documentation on where exactly in the attack speed formula a Sword Strap would fall, but if it operates outside the 80% attack speed cap, it would raise melee DPS by an even larger amount than the above 6.45%. If that is not the case, at least less gear haste may be required to cap your delay reduction, potentially equating to one less reason to buy a Phos Belt!

In summary, I'm looking for enlightened opinions on Sword Strap in ultra haste situations, and if anyone knows where a Sword Strap falls into the "delay = (1-0.dual wield reduction)(1024-equip-magic-ja)/1024," formula, I'd like to know (and put it on a dang wiki).

I believe sword strap acts on delay in the same way as dual wield. I strongly doubt it goes over the cap.

I don't know if/where either of these was ever tested, but I believe that was the consensus.

ffxi calc just does 97% of your final delay/tp/hit up to the 80% cap, if you have floored delay strap is doing nothing.. not sure if thats correct or not D: probably is

Sword strap does not go beyond cap.

(1 - haste/100) * (1 - delayreduction/100) = overallreduction, capped at 0.2 or 20%.

If you have 78.71% Haste and 3% delay reduction from sword strap, this becomes

(1 - 78.71/100) * (1 - 3/100) = x

x = 0.207 to 3sf
therefore you have 20.7% delay remaining with this build, or 79.3% delay reduction. You had 21.29% remaining previously.

80% is a hard cap. Nothing you do will reduce delay beyond that point, be it dual wield, haste, embrava, JA haste, blitzer's roll, delay minus, prayer ... you get the idea.
