If there is a specific topic to discuss, though, then make a topic for it.

But there's just so many topics to discuss! There's the DNC election, or a Kansas man shooting and killing an Indian immigrant engineer he thought was Middle Eastern. Linking Fox news there for our conservative friends, even though Fox just made up a Swedish defense and national security advisor and had him speak on TV, talk about facts I don't like! Or Muhammad Ali, Jr. being detained in a Florida airport because of his name, to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office confirming former Attorney General Scott Pruitt (now Administrator of the EPA) used a private email for state business.

I was surprised this was an RP&R rant-thread (or is it a love-lorn testament to a lost RP&R?) :p

I clicked on this thread thinking it'd be a Sam Cooke kind of thing...

...or an Elton John type of thing...

...or even a Mel McDaniel kind of (inbred) thing...

...but damn if all of those aren't somehow thematically appropriate for RP&R, anyway. :p RIP #19! ;_;

You know, I wouldn't mind P&R being open on the weekends, but then again, it causes these funny reactions.

Fox News Interview With Fake Expert on Sweden Further Baffles Swedes
The Intercept

Quote:
A man interviewed by Bill O’Reilly of Fox News this week, who was identified in an on-screen caption as a “Swedish Defense and National Security Advisor,” turns out to be entirely unknown in his native country, with no connections to either the nation’s defense or security services.

As the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported on Friday, Nils Bildt, who echoed President Donald Trump’s debunked claim that immigrants from Muslim majority nations had driven a rise in violent crime in Sweden, has no known expertise in national security, and has not lived in his homeland since 1994. Officials at the Swedish Defense Ministry and Foreign Office told the newspaper they have never heard of this “unknown Bildt.”

His only claim to fame appears to be the fact that his father, Sven Tolling, is “well know in Swedish equestrian circles,” according to Dagens Nyheter. How he came to be presented by Fox News as an expert in a segment broadcast on Thursday night remains a mystery — as does why he changed his name from Tolling to Bildt after he emigrated the United States.

Nevertheless, when Bildt was asked by O’Reilly to respond to comments from Anne-Sofie Näslund, a U.S. correspondent for the newspaper Expressen who disputed the Fox News host’s claim that a recent rise in violent crime in Sweden was caused by an “influx” of refugees from Muslim nations, he confidently dismissed her fact-driven argument.

Bildt, whose adopted last name is the same as that of Sweden’s former prime minister, Carl Bildt, a relentless critic of Donald Trump, told Dagens Nyheter by email that he is “an independent analyst based in the USA.”

It was a Fox News producer, Nils Bildt said, who made the decision to give him the official-sounding title of Swedish Defense and National Security Advisor. “I had no personal control over what title they chose,” Bildt wrote.

Näslund, who had been forced to listen to Bildt dismiss her fact-based argument out of hand, pointed out on Twitter that the Swedish immigrant to the United States who claimed that immigrants to Sweden are violent, was reportedly arrested in Virginia for committing a violent crime in 2014.

In his remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, Trump reiterated his claim that immigration from Muslim-majority countries had compromised security in Sweden, even though the Fox News segment that he cited as evidence earlier in the week was widely debunked as inaccurate in the Swedish media.

Update: 7:55 p.m. ET

After this post was originally published, Dana Klinghoffer, a Fox News vice president for corporate communications, contacted The Intercept to ask that our report be amended to add this quote from David Tabacoff, the executive producer of Bill O’Reilly’s show: “Our booker made numerous inquiries and spoke to people who recommended Nils Bildt and after pre-interviewing him and reviewing his bio, we agreed that he would make a good guest for the topic that evening.”

Apparently, that is supposed to excuse the broadcaster for having featured a complete charlatan in prime time.

The network also asked that we add “something you can just attribute to a network rep or spokesperson.” That statement is as follows: “Bill O’Reilly will further address this on Monday night’s The O’Reilly Factor.”

They should have tried this guy:

Oh the poor migrants.

We can help them 10 times more efficiently if we keep them in their own region.

Panic ensued and a number of people were injured after a suspected arson attack on Restad gård in Vänersborg, the largest asylum centre in Sweden.
One man was seriously injured after escaping the fire by jumping from the third floor.

Emergency services were called at around 4:15 am to a fire in a common room on the third floor of the residential facility run by the Swedish migration authority (Migrationsverket). There was a large amount of smoke by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.

A dozen people inhaled smoke, of which most were given oxygen on the spot. Three were taken to Norra Älvsborg Hospital in Trolhätten.

"One person is seriously injured due to trauma from jumping [from height]. The other two have smoke-related injuries," communications director Niklas Claesson of Norra Älvsborg Hospital told news agency TT.

A second person also jumped from a window of the building, according to emergency services.

Palestinian James Abedrabbo, who lives on the third floor of the centre, said he was woken by a fire alarm and was frightened to realise that the fire was no a false alarm.

"It was strange and scary. When I opened the door to my room I saw a lot of smoke and we were immediately evacuated," Abedrabbo told P4 Väst.

The fire is being treated as a suspected arson. Police are suspected to begin a technical examination of what caused the fire once the third floor is accessible on Monday.

Resta gård is the largest asylum accommodation in Sweden, according to Caroline Arvaker, security coordinator with Vänersborg Municipality.

158 people live in the building. Those residing on the first and second floors will be able to return to their rooms on Sunday, while around 50 people living on the third floor will be transferred to alternative accommodation nearby.

The residents were taken immediately after the fire to a nearby sports centre and a hotel in the area provided breakfast. Swedish charity POSOM, the Red Cross and other organisations were all involved in providing relief.

"Everything went very smoothly," Jonathan Kvist, unit director with Migrationsverket, told TT.

American journalist Tim Pool has spent two days seeing 'dangerous' Malmö with his own eyes.
But the city did not live up to the bleak picture he had been told to expect.

"If this is the worst Malmö has to offer, then don't ever come to Chicago," Pool told news agency TT after visiting Rosengård, a neighbourhood with a high immigrant population.

Pool met municipal council member Nils Karlsson, who gave the journalist a guided tour of Malmö neighbourhoods Lindängen and Rosengård.

"I want to show the true picture of Malmö - without denying that there there are problems, poverty and challenges. But also to show that 330,000 people live in this city and most do not engage in crime or violence or kill each other," Karlsson told TT.

Pool's journalistic visit came about after Paul Joseph Watson, editor of right wing website Infowars, promised to pay for a trip to Malmö for any journalist that claimed Malmö was safe. This challenge came in the wake of President Donald Trump's false claims last week that a terror attack had taken place in Sweden.

The 18,800 SEK (USD 2,000) donation covers about 20 per cent of the costs of Pool's trip to Sweden and Europe.

"I do not work for anyone. Nobody is paying me and I am not getting anything in exchange for this. I just want to find out the truth," said Pool.

Pool told TT that he describes himself as a conflict and crisis journalist who posts his material on YouTube and Twitter.

The journalist says he is not surprised by Trump's use of Sweden as a device in his rhetoric.

"Many would say that Sweden's liberal policies are evidence that they work and would be of great benefit to the USA. Now Trump is using the issue of immigration to condemn that argument. The connection of crime in Sweden to immigration and refugees is an idea that has existed in the US for several years, even before Trump," said Pool.

While respect the concern regarding increases in violence in Malmö, Pool said that he considered warnings that he would be robbed or attacked in Rosengård as "ridiculous".

"Someone shouted at us and pointed a finger. A takeaway pizza restaurant owner did not want to let in "some *** journalists". But if people are really afraid to come here, then I would recommend that you never come to Chicago. Chicago has about 750 murders each year," he said.

But Pool added that he had so far received conflicting information from residents about violence in the city, and that interview subjects have often cancelled or preferred to remain anonymous.

Following Saturday's tour of Malmö with local Karlsson, Pool and his photographer colleague Emily Molli are scheduled to remain in the city for several days to carry out research.

The pair will also visit Stockholm and Gothenburg, as well as other European cities affected by terror and highlighted as problematic by Donald Trump, such as Brussels, Paris and Nice.

Pool aims to use the material gathered during his trip to make a documentary film.
