Sounds like your ping is high, probably need to call your ISP. 4g is moot if your signal/latency is crap.

It’s a phone. If you have bad reception around your area, chances are the same performance will come about your hotspot...

Have you tried hitting it with a hammer?

QoS routing for cellular network providers are not very conducive to a good/stable ping for gaming.

Is your ISP anybody besides Verizon?

I know a guy who runs on hotspot and I'm pretty sure it's vericrap. Without actually sharking your connection and seeing where your losses are/latency etc it's hard to tell anything. Could try compiling a report and complaining to the ISP, but doubt it will do any good.

I have Verizon and I can tether even on road trips for long distances. I've done long hours (overnight even) on tmobile in my previous house. Might be something up with your ISP's settings for it to be functioning that way. If you can log into FFXI though, I'm doubtful it's actually them and maybe you just had a string of bad luck. You wouldn't have been able to log on period if it was an ISP issue.

At work, I cannot access FFXI through my employer's internet (no idea why, POL screen just keeps giving me a connection error), but as soon as I turn on VPN, it works like a charm. I don't need to use VPN anywhere else, so sometimes the network you're on can have janky settings that mess with FFXI.

Perhaps try seeing if turning on/off VPN improves your connection while tethering. I doubt it, but worth a shot.
