My apologies, she'd be a good entertainer if she learned how to rap. I'm getting kind of old and don't keep up with what the latest generation calls singing anymore.

Rapping isn't supposed to be singing.
That's like saying "man, that pianist would be a lot better if he'd learn to play guitar better."

That's just semantics. You can say someone is a punk rock singer, a rock and roll singer, a yodeling singer, an opera singer, or a rap singer. Changing the form of song doesn't make them any less a singer.

If, however, you wanted to argue she was not a singer I would have accepted "Rhyming the word hoe with the word hoe 48 times does no make you singer."

singing:
Quote:
Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm.

rapping:
Quote:
Rapping (also known as emceeing,[1] MCing,[1] spitting (bars),[2] or rhyming[3]) refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics".[4] The art form can be broken down into different components, as in the book How to Rap where it is separated into “content”, “flow” (rhythm and rhyme), and “delivery”.[5] Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat.[6][7]
Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music and reggae, but the phenomenon predates hip hop culture by centuries. It can also be found in alternative rock such as that of Cake and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rapping is also used in Kwaito music, a genre that originated in Johannesburg, South Africa and is composed of hip hop elements. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area among speech, prose, poetry, and song.

You can argue that rapping and singing overlap somewhat, but for the most part they're only related in their musical accompaniment.

I would argue that Nicki Minaj sings just fine on the parts of her tracks where she actually does employ song.

She's no Mariah Carey, but yeah.

Is rap music?
is rap sound?
is rap made with the voice?
does rap augment regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm?

Not all fruits are apples but all apples are fruits.

I would argue that tonality is in cases irrelevant to the definition of singing in much the same way that rhyming is in situations irrelevant to the definition of poetry (free verse). In rap, by limiting the range of tones they are able to bring focus to the rhythm and rhyme. Holding the tone constant however doesn't change that the essence of what they're doing is singing.

If I go and make a beat on pots and pans, and read aloud a transcript of Hardball with a rhythm, that doesn't mean I'm singing it.

Singing is a form of art, which leaves many liberties to the artist as a result. If your intent is a one tone song that you beat out on pots and pans then yes it is. Many artists don't limit themselves to one tone but using it to draw attention to rhythm and rhyme is pretty clever. A similar situation occurs in writing, my english teachers always told me that starting a sentence with the word "but" is against the rules. But, many consider it acceptable if you use it sparingly to draw attention to something.

At this point your arguing semantics, which never goes anywhere.

Quote:

I consider rapping distinct from singing, and the way they are usually defined, they are indeed different.

You pretty much have to alter their technical definitions to get your argument to work.

I was arguing that in many cases Rap is considered singing, it is as you quote "among speech prose poetry and song". My point however, is more a reaction to the insistence you expressed that I call her a rapper instead of a singer when the distinction between rapper and singer seems rather frivolous. Yet, my true purpose of the argument was that of kindness after seeing your obvious desire to keep this thread bumped.
