http://www.newsweek.com/2010/11/05/why-healthcare-reform-will-survive.html

I thought this article was pretty interesting and thought I'd share. With all the talk about medical care in the states and the importance it will play in our lives thought it might be worth pputting up here.

Having no medical insurance is a very, very bad idea.

One major injury or illness and you'll be in debt for years or decades without medical insurance.

Even if you only buy the "catastrophe" medical insurance (covers hospitalizations and emergency inpatient care, but not routine care, doctor's office visits, labs, or medications), you gotta have medical insurance.

The main reason I oppose it is because it affects me and my fiancee directly. (Well she is the Family doctor, I'm just speaking as her) She works at a 2 doctor family practice, small place. The provisions in the feform will cut her Medicare payments by like 21%. (Btw, she is struggling even as a doctor, last year only made 50k) so imagine getting 21 percentb less from our view point will ultimatly put her practice down the tubes even further. (She dipped in to her own retirement to help keep it afloat I might add, virutally now having no retirement plan.)

Right now they keep pushing back the smaller payments thank god, but eventually it will come if it doesn't get repealed.

I work @ a manufactoring comapny and its sad I make more than her, atm. But that's besides the point.

Having a dog in the fight makes it that much more personal.

stupid part about all this is they dont seem to get the co payments alone is enough to stop peeps from going. If person on limited/fixed income and have any health prob they payment alone is enough to drown a person.

If people had the money, could skip the middlemen alltogether and just pay as we need it to the actual specialists doing the work. (In a perfect world)

I agree that having some sort of insurance is a good idea.

But any major event (I.E heart attack, cancer, etc...) Is going to land you in debt for the majority of your life either way, if not the rest of your life. Considering the fact that hospital time/ meds/ heart surgery is in the network of 600k-1mil depending on your treatment.

I find it funny that so many people think that a job and healthcare are their rights as Americans. I'm sure this sounds cold but it is the absolute right for somebody to die on the street rather than get healthcare they can't pay for.

Even though the entire European Union is crumbling under the weight of its own wellfare state. You guys won't have healthcare in a few years; that ***will be cut way back. Well, maybe not, you guys could just be even more poor.

IDK. Britain suspended and reduced a shitload of it's wellfare programs about a week ago. France is raising it's social security age as well.

We've been suspending welfare programs for years over time tbh, but I'd be very surprised if they suspended the NHS, or the equivalent bodies in each country here.

If they did, a LOT of people would become redundant to start with. It may happen, but like I said, it's very unlikely.

I'm impressed you guys have cut back tbh. Americans are too greedy to ever think they need to stop spending. Even the tea party people who demand lower spending aren't willing to cut anything.

It helps for our countries economic level, but the amount of redundancy caused as a negative side effect is pretty disturbing. We went into the recession about 2-3 years after you, and it hit us really hard. We're starting to come out of it a bit now at least, but the damage done was awful.

Once you guys get jobs you'll be fine. I have no idea how a government can create jobs in a captialist economy though, because you can't force companies to hire a shitload of people.
