She was in her 60's, and she was still an avid barrel racer. This weekend we went to a Memorial Barrel Race in her memory. There was also a dinner, a silent auction, and a live auction. Some 70 cowgirls, several racing kids, and a few cowboys came out to race and support the family. This was in the opening ceremony. The empty horse is for Nana. That's her saddle and her hat on the horse.  It was a bit emotional. This is my sister and me sharing a hug. I'm the one in the purple sparkly hat with my back to the camera. (Sparkle hats are a Nana tradition. She had dozens of them in all different colors, so when she was killed, all the women in the family and all of Nana's female friends got a sparkle cap to wear to the funeral/memorial.) My sister is wearing the event T-shirt.

Liela, Your post is truly beautiful. A real tear-jerker. I'm so sorry to hear about your Nana. It's wonderful that you recognize and continue little traditions in her name. I wish you and your family all the best.

Thanks, Sumo. <3 I was sniffling all day Saturday! But I'm glad that something good came out of her death. Tina's House will be a safe place, and even though I wish she was still alive, I know that other women and their children will benefit a lot from it. She would have liked that.

Liela that is really sweet- quite clear your Nana was loved dearly, not many people get such an honor after passing from this world. We always have those thoughts deep inside about what our legacy will be when we leave this world. Sounds like she left one to be remembered forever. p.s - Sagittario I ride a Trek Speed-Concept now.
