Since you actually need a extra Live account that money goes straight to M$ pockets and since Gears is owned by Microsoft it was pretty much "Do this or gtfo" kind of thing in the end it was a kick in the balls for me when I figured it out =/ Didn't even last half an hour at work... They sent me home cause I'm sick as a dog. Guess I'm in worse shape than I thought I was ._.
