Especially when the Customer Service department is required to verify that the items received for returns is the items in the box, they hardly check (at least in most stores here in SA and surrounding areas). So, these things happen quite often.
When i worked in retail a loooong time ago, I had someone try to return a computer soundcard (the box it came in was pretty large).
The shrinkwrap on it was pretty dodgy so I told the person we had to open the box to verify the contents.
The person said they forgot the receipt in the car and left the box on the counter, they never came back. I opened the box and yeah it had a sandweight in it instead of the sound card.
Later on that day, another store in the same chain called mine because they had someone trying to return the soundcard without the box (the receipt had the originating store of purchase which is why they called me). We basically banned that customer from our store forever for trying to pull a fraud scam and I never saw them again.
