 30% savings is pretty huge. You also have to take into consideration the time and cost of going to places, and where you would either save money, or spend it on fuel costs.
There are plenty of people that drive from the far north end of my city, to the far south end, just to save 2 cents on a liter of gas, despite costing them 5 extra dollars in gas money to get that savings. (ok, 5 dollars may be an exaggeration, depending on idle time at stop lights and traffic) sarcasm tags or italics.
Also, that entire story arc seems to be sarcasm.  watched WataMote recently, really liked how it was made into anime.
the manga is pretty much just some raw material that got polished into anime. the ending was very catchy (I like op/ed where characters rant) Watamote opening song is one of my absolute favourite anime songs, it's great.

Bit late but when he goes to school in episode 2 (I downloaded both before I noticed how ***it is but forced myself through what I downloaded lol) he meets some blue hared chick that he apparently knew 5 years earlier but couldn't recognize and she hugs him immediately (in front of everyone) So... it's kinda that lol so...
