I run win 8.1` on my laptop and have had no issue with games or software but 1.

printer drivers not avail for this version of windows
meh.
dont use a printer much on laptop anyways.

haven't had an issue with steam games in it so far.

sure, I did had to relearn stuff again, but nothing good ol' google couldn't help.
I do say 8.0 had many issues but most of them got fixed on 8.1

As an example, I have this chip programmer (EPROM programer) which only work on XP. And it's one of my work tools.

I tried everything on the book to make it work on Windows 7 (would be good run Windows 7 on this box but I could not make that thing work. And XP is still working fine even with some apps saying they don't want to run without .NET 4... -_-;

You see, that's the MS policy which make old OSes unusable. Every time they update the development tools and compilers they put traps on the code it generate so it "pretends" to run slower on a computer with older OS so when you upgrade you get a "false result" of the computer getting faster, more responsive.

They are very good at being jerks.
Edit: That's another very good reason (it's related to having options) people are moving to open source stuff. Intel can be jerk with their chips but with physical products it's easier to get away with it (I'm looking at you nVIDIA).

Is that programmer rs232 or usb?

As for the software, they aren't the only ones who do that...

Yeah, it's USB but the driver use some sort of system interface which no longer works on Vista/Windows 7. The chip programmer has some sort of FPGA device inside which allows it to reconfigure itself based on the to be programmed/target chip. The driver has some kind of interface which allows the programmer software to upload code to the FPGA inside the programmer to reconfigure it. That does not work properly on Vista/W7.

It's like when POL needed a update to work on Vista.

The difference is that it's impossible to get a new driver for the chip programmer because the Chinese vendors are jerks too and they'd rather sell you a new (expensive) programmer than to provide you any support.

You see, the fact that Microsoft are being jerks created a whole industry around it.

Oh I'm aware of vendors being asshats.

just give in and use an XP VM for that, that way your system isn't as vulnerable, and more compatible with the other stuff that's being released. Just forward the USB to the VM, don't even need the driver installed in the host. I know you have a thing against VMs, but it's one thing they excel at.

If it were just the software that didn't work, you could just make the program a thinapp, but since it's the driver as well...
