This puppy would cost you about $700 give or take.

ok a couple questions - not trying to troll cuz i genuinely do not know

What is that (guessing a motherboard)
What does it do
Why does it cost that much
and why would i want that vs what I have now
That is a video card.

It costs that much because it's a top end, rather new video card.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting you get anything at all. I was merely showing off my dream-machine parts. However, for a brief tour of essential computer hardware, here is a video showing the beginning and ending process to building a PC:

The top is a GTX580 hydro which cost a pretty penny...I wanna say 600+ cause the water fittings.... the second I can't tell what it is. I'm mostly thrown off by the cooler ebcause unless it's a water block EVGA sticks to the reference cooler for the most part...

No but my question is What does it do to make it THAT much better? I mean Do you NEED to have something like that to play the games out there and at what point is it going over what is needed to run a beautiful seamless game if that makes sense :)

Video card, it's what runs the graphics on games and stuff.. High end cards that are cutting edge are expensive.. There are some that cost thousands (although those aren't intended for gaming, they're more for professional use).

Why would you want that? Well that would run pretty much everything you threw at it on max settings.

I stick to the $200-300 range when shopping for a new video card.. They have good power (the one I bought like 3 or 4 years ago can still run pretty much anything on max) but they're not the newest so the prices are slashed (happens when a new line of cards is introduced that trump the previous ones).

There's really no reason to spend 500+ on a video card, people do it for the same reason people buy Ferraris and Porsches.

It will render all games out now, and all games to come out for a few years most likely.

Well depends on what games. And how extreme you want to run the game. If you want it to perform well and to look extermely crisp playing any modern Direct X11 game you will want a card like that. If you don't mind it not being that crisp and are ok with a lower framerate then you do not need one like that. Also If you play on a just one monitor and never go past 1920x1080 resolution. If you want to play the newest games to where they look stunning at high resolutions and on multiple monitors your will require a card like that maybe not that exact card. you can slip by with one that's like $250 but that will only get middle of the road performce $350 would get you good performance and $500 plus would be rather nice on performance. It's all relevant to what you want and what are willing to pay....also Power supply limitations etc.

I want one of these so bad.

I have the 920 (@ 2.67 GHz) <.< Without a doubt the best CPU I've ever had.. But not without it's flaws.. It's really hard to bog down, but it can be done, especially when you can open up tons of programs and not notice any lag, but sometimes you end up pushing it a little to far and it just craps out and crashes.

I wish. I drive a Civic, but I do run a monster GPU. And you do notice performance jumps going from a good $250ish card to the higher tier cards. But honestly that's only for enthusiast.

Difference being you can legally unleash a GTX 590, you can't even legally unleash a civic. forgot to put my whole point in there.

Go to start menu, click run (or in the search bar at the bottom type 'run') when the prompt comes up, type "dxdiag" click yes or no on the box that pops up, doesn't really matter, then go to the tab that says Video (first one) and it will tell you what GPU you have, or you can just post a screen shot of that screen and we can tell you.

I'm still running a 1GB HD4870 <.< I can run FFXIV on near max, and I can run pretty much everything else on max without any noticeable lag (I'm sure I probably get lower frame rates, but it's not enough that it's obvious when you're just playing the game) I think the card was like 270 when I bought it.

I posted my card in my edit up there <_< and it's a monster I max everything without lag I just don't keep those settings on at all times because then the card runs 75C or more on each core and it makes my room extremely hot lmao. I typically don't max the super minute details like aliasing 30000 miles away simply to keep it running at extreme settings without making me sweat.

I've been happy with the HD ati series. Not sure what my next card will be but my first one was a 3xxx, and my current is a 5850. Almost anything I run now is held back by the processor as its a last gen core2quad.

I don't really worry about any of that stuff either, I just worry about the textures and such.. I can run most of that crap on FFXIV just fine, but I just don't because I don't see the point, I don't see too much of a difference.

Exactly. I can fire it up and run the distances maxed but then I sweat like crazy. So I max everything out to a point where I don't break 60 at most 65C on both cores and then play.

edit: other specs
I7 960 3.2ghz
12 GB corsair ram
1000w collermaster silent pro gold psu
80 gb boot/game ssd(really need to upgrade this)
1TB samsung 7200 storage drive.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 is your graphics processor.

AMD HD 4200M would be a compressed saying of that.

Well that's you have, an HD4200 series..

Could be better, but it's not bad.

Processor is pretty weak though. If anything is going to hold you back when it comes to playing games, it's going to be the processor.

Hard to upgrade laptops and not really worth it.

Also Slip do remember that all laptops have lower core clocks to compensate for the lack of cooling. But IMO both would hold you back from playing newer games, of the two though the CPU is worse.

Edit: Intel and AMD are different but it's far more noticeable in the market of laptop CPU's. In desktop you can still get away with using a cheaper AMD cpu if you run a good GPU but that also may be because for the most part AMD run faster base clocks but that's a lottttttt different and I'm going of course discussing those kinda things.

considering what the socket would be you'd have to upgrade the mobo too, which would mean upgrading the ram, and numerous other things. It'd be a pita even if it wasn't a laptop.

That's what I meant probably worded it wrong.. Didn't mean it to sound like the only reason she might be held up on a game is because of the CPU <.< just that it would almost definitely the foremost cause of why she wouldn't be able to play more modern games <.<
