It's sort of similar, I suppose, to other jobs where people seem to have excessive amounts of risk-aversion (for example, postal carriers avoiding even tiny dogs on the loose because they are a risk of a bite-injury)--but have good reason to do so (not wanting to lose out on work due to injury during a peak-work season, wanting to avoid the hassle of litigating or OSHA/worker's comp paperwork if injury were to happen, etc.) :)
