Ugh. Triggered. In the actual sense of the word a bit.

There was a group of stray kittens last week that the mother cat apparently dropped off in my yard while she went out hunting or whatever. They decided hanging out under my truck was a good idea. Luckily I saw them before I drove anywhere and my wife and I, trying not to *** with strays too much but wanting them to be safe, put a big box (b/c cats love boxes, right?) and a little cat-friendly food in the box in the back of our yard to keep them away from our very busy road.

Only worked for 3/5 kittens. Woke up the next morning to two ex-kittens on my street and the other three nowhere in sight. ;_;

I still feel bad. Hope the other three kitties are okay.

For some reason it just kinda made us feel rotten. They were strays, you know? Honestly no different than any other wild animal getting plastered by a car which happens all the freaking time. And frankly a neighborhood full of stray cats isn't actually something I want.

But...eh. I guess it's probably because they were small and cute and we tried to prevent exactly that unfortunate event.

They are feral cats anyway. It's not like they are willing to do what you want or at least trust a human. Odds are more likely that they have been mistreated by humans in the first place.

To be honest, the mother cat probably didn't want her kittens to take the food, because she knows that there are a lot of shitty humans who would do exactly what you did, but poison the food or trap/kill the kittens when they get the food.

Next situation where you want to keep kittens away from the road like that will require some time from you to do it, but I have had success with stray kittens/cats (my home apparently is a kitty dumping ground in my county >.>) by hand-feeding them personally. It always takes a few hours to do it, but as long as you let them come to you, you can always succeed in their trust. Even helps when you let them stay on your property too, if they want to do it.

I have rescued many cats this way. Helps that I don't have much to do anyway.
