I had to buy my own ps2 because my family hates video games :c
My family's rather neutral on VGs. In fact, it was my own mother during my birthday at either age five or six that gave me my first system and a few games. I remember only because it was a pivotal moment in my life. It was an Atari 7600 ProSystem and the games were Centipede and Galaga, and she and I'd play Galaga for hours on end on the weekends. There's still times when we just happen on an old Galaga cabinet and play the *** out of that one game. It's like the family war of attrition where we can't help but want to beat the other one's high score for that one particular game.
Then, when the SNES and Genesis came out, those were Christmas presents... and I got the original Gameboy not long after those, followed by the N64... and ma's always encouraged my tinkering with computers, too. Pops always hated till the day he died that I turned out to be a techie, and my family treats me like the tech support desk because of it.
TL;DR version: Family is really understanding and encouraging.
