We will always wonder what could have been if HBO had just waited to let GRRM finish his books before even greenlighting the show. The cast might have been different, but I would have been willing to wait an extra decade for a better show. Giving the writers that much creative freedom clearly bit them in the ***.
Let's be completely honest though, Game of Thrones would have never been popular in the first place if it wasn't for all of the nudity/sex scenes. That's what trapped people into the show in the first place.

The books are just as graphic though so its not like they added that ***in for just the show. The director/producers/HBO had the option to remove those scenes, but kept them in anyway. Then again, my viewpoint/opinion is based on an outsider's view. The show actually added a lot of sexual violence which was just weird (not in the books at all) and upset fans, as well as the cast, quite a bit. It hasn't been a good show, and it doesn't look like its going to end well.
