Finally got around to seeing i know what you did last summer... like why. I hate when they do stuff like that.
I think there is a pattern here.
There is a difference between a story/art ongoing on, and another one completely finished
I realized that when I was wondering why people like JJK so much when there are better stories all over.
My conclusion is that part of the interest lies in waiting for a new release, a new chapter. There is a value with holding a period of time where none know whats going, then everyone get at same page around the same time, that generate discussion, engagement, and this enhance the effect of a media.
So, why JJK was that popular despite not being technically a good story? Because it was the “current” trending story for an audience, the target audience. Boys who joined the story at same time, discuss with each other the current chapter, discuss what is going to happen, create theories, etc. there is a whole lot ecossystem around a story that is part of it, and only makes sense for people in that generation.
That is why OG Dragon Ball isnt discussed. Because anyone can start and finish the entire story in a couple of weeks. There is nothing to “discover”, nothing new to discuss. Everything is already there. And that is one of the reason why less people from younger generation wouldnt consume an older story: because it doesnt generate the same engagement of an ongoing story.
That is my theory about why some stories fail and other successed, despite its inherent quality: some product can ressonate with an ongoing trend while others cant.
Thus why people try again revive old franchise, in an attempt to use the same story and generate new engagement. Examples like Dragon Ball, those many movies out there etc.
So short answer, but not that short as simply saying it is about money, but because you cant force young people to consume old stories like its a release, so you try a new reboot.
The fact you dislike it, just makes clear it is just because you are not the target audience.
