Just don't do it in a cinematic event, then the phoenixdown won't work.
Phoenix down doesn't resurrect people. When your hp go to 0 during a fight the character is just knocked out, fainted, so the pd wakes him up. It's for this reason that characters can actually die as stories unfold.


Then why do they work when when a character has Death cast on them in battle.
It's explained by the wall built between gameplay and story telling that is present in almost every game.

I could see Leon going on GoT style and cutting everyone down... No idea if mine is in or not so maybe I will survive by virtue of non existance!

It's more than a few titles... and beyond that you're basically advocating gameplay over actual lore... 99% of games can't just let the main characters in the story die off or the allusion of it for the story... Phoenix downs serve the same purpose as a spell like raise...
