Hmmmm seems like they are trying back up again. Most the ideas for 4th gen reactors are liquid cooled

Sodium burns readily in oxygen and reacts in an explosive manner in contact with water

To answer both quotes...

Ya.. um.. that's bad.. We don't want that.

There are alot of advantages to liquid metal cooling though. 1 it's much better than water for a fast reactor which means we can use unenriched uranium. Or depleted uranium. Higher boiling points mean you can have pressure much lower while maitaining higher operating temps. Less corrosive better heat transfer etc.

Sound to me that they are weathering it out. Calm before the storm..sounds..

Taazy, is that Uk reporting the news at 1:14 a.m or is that Japan 1:14 pm in the afternoon??

Alkali metals in general are just fun :o)
That too. They doing lead too but it has it's problems too. Some cool stuff looking into it. quartz reflector nifty...

Actually all the gen IV designs look pretty radical and awesome... might have to read up more on them lol. 1000C operating temp ftw?

Oh come on, Tokomacs have 100,000,000C operating temperature :D
Yeah but they also require rediculous amounts of energy just to start up... and I'm pretty sure they still haven't managed to get a fusion reaction that lasted long enough to actually get anywhere near the amount of energy out as they put in.... currently they are theoretical really. Close to more or less working... but even after they do get them working then there is the process of making a good reactor from it. Designing new systems for it. Procedures. Training people up certifying it etc. It will be several decades at best. Though most gen IVs are projected around 2030ish lol

OK Now I remember in our science class, You can even ask Lilkimberly on here as we both attended the same High School. We had a chemistry teacher set up a small little experiment, and there was a old bottle of Potassium near the sink( at the time there must have been some water in the sink from a previous class usage)

anyhow... thankfully no one was injured, but the flash from the explosion was contained up front of the class, but the ppl in front row got a good "flashy" show...

Thanks Dasva and Cat.. know I remember.. and that video clip, I watch those guys alot.. they are apart of some UK guys car show called Autos or something..

They did design a whole new type of fusion method that worked better theoretically, but I can't remember what it was for the life of me.. They're still rolling out, last I checked they were only getting back about 30% power but it's improving with different delivery and containment methods.
65% as of last year... however they only had .5 second reaction lol.

Wern't they thinking of trying to get energy from Dark matter?

There was a thread on here, about some reactor or something and the scientists found they could maybe, possibly able to extract atomic energy from dark matter..

What was that called again?

First you have to have sensors sensitive enough to even detect dark matter, which we barely even have.
And things that are hard to detect are usually that way because they have so little effect on the world around them... making them not very viable for energy demands. Kinda like nuetrinos :). In fact it was discovered the same way. Math equations not working out so must be somethign there we can't detect

Oh it is worse since we can actually detect neutrinos and despite our best attempts have yet to get a confirmed results
