MSNBC Says an explosion happened at the third plant. and is comparing it to 3 mile island. Can anyone confirm how bad this can get??

PM has confirmed that radiation has leaked from the reactors that exploded as well as No 4 that caught fire.

He is asking ppl to evacuate from the 20 km to 30 km from the No1 plant

and 10km to 20km from the No 2 plant

Chief Secretary is confirming ongoing fire in No 4 reactor. He says no fuel rods in No 4 but spent fuel is located inside of it.

Just the guy I wanted to hear from. I was expecting them to blow it out of proportion. But also they say it may have cracked the case which causes it to leak out more radiation.

TMI was not really that bad at all. But I saw today that they said based on the amount of plutonium still in the plant if it did go critical it could wipe half the island due to ratiation poison. Scary thought.

The truth is probably somewhere in between what the Japanese media is saying, and what the rest of the media is saying.

Yes this could pose a big problem in the long run, but no where near the level the US/UK/any other outside media is making it out to be.

I keep seeing articles labeling this as "Japan's nuke crisis".. If that's not over sensationalizing it, I don't know what is.

If i remember correctly, the average radiation exposure is somewhere in the 500-600 mREM a year, so that would be 4ish REM/hr

What's that, 8 REM/hr?

I can't remember our yearly dose
Depends. From just natural sources it's a little over 300mrem a year. But depending on what you do you can easily get as much or more from manmade sources. From various medical stuff to alot of machinery or just smoking. So different countries often have different averages

What numbers they are using is anyones guess

It's not that bad. Just do some stay time calculations and rotate people thru

The people near the power plants have been requested to stay indoors. Keep all windows, doors etc closed. Avoid going outside. Do not use any ventilation that could allow particles to enter from the outside.

I hate how they always say it's X times as much as this none number that varies depending on the source. It always just makes think they are trying to hide the exact numbers

The latest explosion seems to have worsened the situation at one of the reactors.

Just to be safe, they're telling folks to stay indoors and calling some of the workers away from the plant. So far radiation levels don't seem to have risen to dangerous levels, but there's a possibility the containment structure was partially damaged, so they're playing it safe until they know for sure.

As bad as it is, every minute that goes by, the chance of a cataclysmic disaster decreases because the cores have had quite awhile to cool by now.

Probably the clearest we can get--found at http://mitnse.com/2011/03/15/damage-to-fukushima-daiichi-2-world-nuclear-news/ (Props to Jaerik for the mitnse link):

Damage to Fukushima Daiichi 2 [World Nuclear News]

Posted on March 15, 2011 by mitnse

Loud noises were heard at Fukushima Daiichi 2 at 6.10am this morning. A major component beneath the reactor may be damaged.

Confirmation of loud sounds this morning came from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA). It noted that “the suppression chamber may be damaged.” It is not clear that the sounds were explosions.

Also known as the torus, this large doughnut-shaped structure sits in the centre of the reactor building at a lower level than the reactor. It contains a very large body of water to which steam can be directed in emergency situations. The steam then condenses and reduces pressure in the reactor system.

The pressure in the pool was seen to decrease from three atmospheres to one atmosphere after the noise, suggesting possible damage. Radiation levels on the edge of the plant compound briefly spiked at 8217 microsieverts per hour but later fell to about a third that.

A close watch is being kept on the radiation levels to ascertain the status of containment. As a precaution Tokyo Electric Power Company has evacuated all non-essential personnel from the unit. The company’s engineers continue to pump seawater into the reactor pressure vessel, in an effort to cool it.

Prime minister Naoto Kan has requested that everyone withdraw from the ten kilometer evacuation zone around the nuclear power plant and that people that stay within remain indoors. He said his advice related to the overall picture of safety developments at Fukushima Daiichi, rather than those at any individual reactor unit.
