The JP use the same word for potato and worms (potato bugs), such as they call crawlers in game potatoes.

I'll share this that I just posted on my Facebook wall: "Well that was bizarre, just got a stupid call from a woman who I'll assume was from India saying she was from the World Wide Server and that they got a report saying my computer had a trojan virus, before I could get into how she was wrong and no such thing happens she started saying "You are stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid" hung up only to call several seconds later saying "I'm saying you are stupid, S-T-U-P-I-D" and then hung up again."

Perhaps you were prank called.

This sounds like the scam they tried on me once. Was woken up by the phone one morning someone from CompuTech/Microsoft/etc saying my computer is sending them error messages, I'm out of it so I'm just like yea go on, but then she says my computer's warranty has expired. That's when I wake up and start laughing at her, saying I built that PC myself and it's got a lifetime warranty lol.

Then next week they called back this time claiming to be another company (but sounded the same speakerphone line echo Indian accent etc) This time I played a full on computer illiterate so I could easily stall for time between steps they wanted me to do, so I could find out what they were trying.

Quote:
The scam always starts the same way: the phone rings at someone's home, and the caller – usually with an Indian accent – asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before saying "I'm calling for Microsoft. We've had a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer."

Dire forecasts are made that if the problem is not solved, the computer will become unusable.

The puzzled owner is then directed to their computer, and asked to open a program called "Windows Event Viewer". Its contents are, to the average user, worrying: they look like a long list of errors, some labelled "critical". "Yes, that's it," says the caller. "Now let me guide you through the steps to fixing it."

The computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of the computer, and the caller "installs" various "fixes" for the problem. And then it's time to pay a fee: £185 for a "subscription" to the "preventative service".

The only catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, the caller is not working for Microsoft or the internet service provider, and the owner has given a complete stranger access to every piece of data on their machine.

I followed all the way, carefully, till they asked me to put a website address into the Run box, instead I loaded in my browser and found it to be a remote control program as expected. When I asked how much this would cost they said it depends on how much you can afford sir. Wouldn't give me a straight answer then they got impatient saying they have to help other people, this is where I lost it him and called him out on his scam. He started questioning me on how do I know it's a scam. Then asked me to go to Google and type in my name and see what comes up. (Trying to show me how unreliable google is etc lol) For a laugh I did, using my alias: yup all 10 links are all from/about me...end of call.
