ffxiii wasnt good
By Artemicion 2011-12-11 14:36:35
The way I see it is SE is going down their own path of what they believe would be the best selling and marketed approach to their existing franchise. It just sucks that what was once the status quo and accepted norm of their JRPGs are starting to become more of a fan service than what they inspire to improve upon. It sucks. :|
But as long as they make money, they don't really care what the diehard oldies enjoy.
Legends never die.
I'll be happy to be the angry old man with his nostalgia cane playing two dimensional FF4 5 and 6. Or blocky polygon characters in 7 8 and 9.
That's good enough for me. And in a way, I wouldn't want them to improve or re-make them, as that would alienate the mastery of their existence in the first place. Almost to say they weren't good enough already, ya know?

Interesting. Well, in that case, S-E screwed up, and whatever "fans" (probably Japanese fans; sorry if anyone finds that offensive) wanted a "younger" main character, fail.
Thanks for the info Josi!

Basch was a stronger character, even without equal character development too.

I didn't like FFXIII overall. Story had an interesting premise, the gameplay (battle system) had interesting concepts, music was good...but in the end, I was just irritated.
People seem to praise the characters because they go through character development throughout the game. however, if a character you (or I in this case) think is fundamentally unlikable, development isn't going to be enough. IMO, the characters in FFXIII are shallow and soulless, and far too melodramatic to be likable. When they develop, all they become is -less- annoying, less melodramatic. They're not suddenly awesome all of a sudden because of change. I've seen people describe Hope as manly, and badass. I could not possibly disagree more; Hope could never reach that point to me. I also hated Barthandelus for his stupid stilted monotone dialogue and delivery and being completely unmemorable and underwhelming. nobody will ever see him in the same light as, say, kefka. Oh, and Jihl Nabaat? What a joke she was in the end. I could go on about other characters too (Snow's posse, who show up like twice and I'm supposed to care?) but no need to make this longer.
TL;dr I didn't like the characters.
I won't be buying FFXIII-2 until I've heard enough about it to know if its worth it.

13 story i liked it but gameplay was horable walking a line sucks *** and i find it stupid how you get a limit to how far you can expand the grid for each chapter think should be posable to sit there and grind for hours so you can superpower your charecters

i must say i didn't like how you can only level up 3 different jobs for each character, well you can level the other ones but its almost impossible without massive grinding. i'd like to make hope a melee character etc. i guess the customizing in ff13 IS a little lackluster :/

No, they just made it so you COULD customize, but it was shallow, and each of them was best at a certain job by a large degree. (See: They were incredibly weak as any other job.)
Also, the character development was incredibly weak. They had one conflict for each character, and after it was solved, they were almost completely irrelevant to the goings on in the game. I honestly think Sahz was the best developed character, and that's only because he was modified by the preconceptions of fatherhood.
Also, I wanted to punch an old lady when I realized Vanille was the main character. ***. That. Noise.

Did you play it to endgame? This is not true.

You honestly think the characters or the group didn't develop beyond the resolution of a main conflict? There are so many cutscenes involving their development...
And speaking of irrelevant, every character's motives for fighting (and what they hope to achieve) are constantly analysed - how much can you say this about the other FFs? Why do certain characters even follow you? And ... well, 12 was just hideous in that respect so not even worth comparing.

anyway, you can expect ff13-2 to be the greatest game ever, I'm sure they will take ff13, make a lot of customization, and make it not linear at all (because SE always listens to the customer complaints!) :D

You must have been playing a different game to the rest of us then, because each characters conflict was directly linked to their focus, which was the mainstay of the entire storyline.

XIII had horrible character development, horrible plot line, horrible gameplay, horrible world, and horrible everything just about. At least compared to every other FF game ever made.
Not saying I didn't like it, but it was by far the worst FF game I've ever experienced.
IMO, people saying anything otherwise are either fan-boying it up or has rose tinted glasses on.
My opinion won't change, don't bother trying.

very much this... the only issue with ffxiii is the linearity of storyline but the extras on Pulse (if you bother to do them, as any fan of the series should) take the gameplay timer way past 60hours.
from what i've seen of 13-2 tho, they seem to have made the game severely less linear, but can we really argue that most other ff games are incredibly linear until a certain point, example being ff9 until post-lindblum gameplay.

I think that's a little unfair about the fanboy rose tinted etc.
Character development was not bad at all imo, the relationships and struggles of ALL the characters changed as the game progressed and they discovered they shared a common fate. Rivalries became friendships, characters found comfort in one another and relationships developed a great deal as they discovered more about their purpose.
Plot line I thought was pretty damn clever and I did not see it coming at all. The twist on the airship was one of those moments that catches you off guard, I find alot of the people who complain about the plot don't understand it either. There are alot of subtletys that you have to discover through memoirs that piece together a grand story of gods and men.
Gameplay was slick and smooth throughout. How you can say it was horrible is a mystery. I never encountered a single glitch throughout the entire game. Yes it was linear and I know what you are getting at but wrong choice of words there :3
The world on Cocoon was limited and dark, but once on Pulse it was incredible. The visuals are stunning, the scope breathtaking. Sure it was not a world map, but it's a very different game compared to the Final Fantasy of old.
To say these things were horrible is unfair, obviously when comparing against the magic games of old it is very likely to come up short, but how many new generation games have you played that CAN compare?

It's kinda shitty to leave players hanging on so long with a cliffhanger.

I will hand it to SE for continuing to support their flagship product, unlike Valve.
