I might be way off, but aren't PS3 games Bluray and PS2 basically DVD's?

A Bluray player can play DVD's, just doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. I think the PS3 can play PS1 games too...

It can play PSX games, but I also remember (but can't find anything to back it up) that they took it out to lower the PS3's cost. Don't quote me on that tho.

Regardless, it's some hilarious yet face palming excuses that they have put out for why PS2 support was taken off the PS3.

Also,ps1 emu was removed after the intial models lost all backwards support, but was secretly (and unoffically still by sony) readded when they started releasing slews of PS1 games on the PSN.They never mentioned it,never said it was a feature, nothing, but if you put a PS1 disc into an up to date firmware PS3,it'll play just fine

So... they didn't support PS2 games because basically they were flooding the market with PS3 games pushing PS2 games off the shelf so customers would buy the PS3 instead?

I think giving support for the PS2 would help, but then customers might not buy so many PS3 games in the process?

Also doesn't PS4 come out in like 10-11 months?

oh and to clarify only the first 60gb, 20gb and 80gb can support ffxi I thought only the 60 could but I have since been told the other two can as well.

the 60gb has the ps2's emotion engine in it (ps2 hardware)

the 20 and 80 software emulate

as to why none of the later models have it, it's simple: greed.

WROOOOONG

20GB is SAME motherboard as 60GB. It lacks WIFI and memory card slots on the front. That's why 60GB is "CECH A" and 20GB is "CECH B".

80GB models that play PS2 range from "CECH C" to "CECH E".

Europe never had models with EE chip. They got "CECH C" as the 60GB model.

ah was misinformed and stand corrected, but wow still *** the 20gb...

does the motherboard have the connecters for the wifi and memory cards still?

edit: don't care about europe :P

It was also a cost cutting measure. The PS3 was a huge loss per unit initially. Launch PS3s had a PS2 essentially built in to play PS2 games. The MGS bundle n such dropped the PS2 CPU in favor of software emulation, but still had the GPU integrated. When they cut out the hardware entirely, PS2 compatibility went with it, but it further reduced the cost of building the machine.

considering I can emulate the ps2 on a pc and have been able to for years, I'm sure Sony with full access to their own code could easily do it, they just don't in favor of profiting instead of keeping their loyal fans happy they'd rather resell already sold games online.

that's just how it is, and is why some people hack their ps3's

Also wrong. It NEVER happened.

The PS3 has strict regional restrictions on PS1 and PS2 discs though.

Also special PS2 discs (Utility discs, the HDD disc) and a few early games (For example: Intelligent Qube+ SCPS-11001 MTSCJ) are blacklisted and the emulator will refuse to boot them.

People hack consoles/handheld because they can. Ps2 compatibility or not has nothing to do with it.

But adding on the PS2 discussion, if you buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, make sure to look up if the games are compatible, about 10% of the games aren't compatible with fat ps3. (Learned it the hard way with Wild Arms 5 but glad I didn't get rid of my PS2 lol!)

I'll disagree just on the point that I thought about just getting a new one and doing it for that support instead of going the route I did, but I enjoy my online capability for when I have internet.

Also damn I didn't know they went above WA3, I'll have to hunt down 4 and 5.

Mariane: look up for a question.
