One thing i have noticed. The arguement about things "Always being on" is more true than i care to admit. I have an xbox 360 and a PS3. I noticed that unless i unplug the PS3, there is a little fan or two in there that is ALWAYS running. I only notice because i turn off everything when i go to bed and in the silence i hear it. Now, i unplug my PS3 and my Xbox when i am not using them. How will doing stuff like this effect these "Always on" consols? Also, think abou the bills. We will shell out several hundred dollars for these consols and for them to always be on, using electricity, will run our electric bills up a couple a dollars every month, which WILL add up in very short order. I also do not like the idea of it running 24/7, wouldnt that wear out the electronics faster?
Sorry but i shut down everything when i don't use it, even my computer. So to hell with these next gen consols, i'll stick with my desktop. At least i can still play games, listen to music, watch movies, and many other things without the internet!

I still may buy a vacuum cleaner if my electricity goes out on occasion, but if I'm worried enough about being able to vacuum while my electricity is out, and Sony and Nintendo are offering vacuum cleaners that work without electricity for the same price, why would I buy microsoft's electricity-only vacuum cleaner?
My roommate has cats. I just can't not vacuum! I'm so disappointed in microsoft, I expected better cleaning appliances from them.

My PS2 being on standby plugged in =/= hypothetical next gen console that requires internet to actually work.

Quetzalcoatl.Xaxial said: » it If your console gets to hot, it will continue to cool itself down after shutoff, to prevent damage. It is an auto-safety feature.
and remote play on also that what i been reading online why the fan is on while you turn it off also see if you don't have it on standby lol.
Also there very small fans and don't waste that much electricity. The only issue with always online is people who have cap internet. Like most part of the world now and even USA is starting to have this type of cap.
I think it's *** but then again i never got any on the new console i'm too use to upgrading my PC and playing PC games.

either way, we are not quite at the point where manditory internet connection can be implemented without hurting profits in a big way. On top of that, i am still very much bothered by their efforts of trying to kill used games and lock games to a single consol. Sorry but i prefer Steam's way of doing things. Buy the game, download it, play it to your hearts content. If your desktop shits the bed and you have to make a new one, or buy if you're lazy, then you can log into your account, download again, and your set. As long as you update it and play it at least once while connected to the internet, you're set for playing offline when ever you want.
Yay for playing portal 2, half life 2, and a bunch of other stuffs while on deployment.

The "I don't use this service" or "this always works for me anyways" is kind of a lame cop-out for a very pressing matter that affects a great percentage of potential consumers they're attempting to market for.
To even remotely consider the always-on internet connection as a mandate for functionality speaks volumes and presents tangible testimony to how out of touch higher ups are from their consumer base and target audience. DRM of any measure has always been approaching a service problem from the angle of loss prevention, which time and time again has continuously alienated legitimate customers and further provided incentive and enabled people to resort to the very thing they're attempting to control and/or eliminate.
I was nowhere near the level of advocacy to piracy until the past 2-3 years or so. Until I actually started paying attention to the practices at hand, and the severe disregard for the consumer.
Like I've boycotted movies since the sopa BS, butt I realize I'm one of the severe few.

IF Microsoft really wants to go this route and gain my support, then they need to do 2 things first:
1. Fork over billions upon billions of dollars to help get broadband to the places that don't have it.
2. Insure that Live and and any game/service we access through it is "always on" aka no downtime ever.
Hey, I figure if they want to ask the impossible of us, we may as well ask the impossible of them in return.

If Microsoft required Windows to be always online to work, their market share would vanish so fast their heads will spin, and they know it.

MicroSoft is the epitome of companies who think their customers are their serfs. I have no desire to provide positive reinforcement to a bunch of megalomaniacal nerds in their quest to steer us into what is only a Utopia if you are a higher-up in the MS corporation. They are what I complain about SE, but times 1000. Don't tell us what we want, and quit making our lives miserable because you fail at programming and would rather lose half your base than lose face to people who outsmarted you.

Even if an ISP says there is no cap... there is, it's just stupid high, and yes you can hit it... I have plenty of times lol, usually they just throttle your speeds down in that case.

My package is advertized as "unlimited" broadband. But when you read the terms and conditions,like you said its "fair use policy" which is 500gb a month. I've gone over it a few times and the first two times they sent out a warning letter and 3rd time they changed upped the price of the package for me ;-;

What DRM will PS4 be using? has there been any mention yet?
It never changes... publishers and console makers wanna stop piracy,
yet somehow hurt the paying comsumer more than the pirates in the process. We have seen this time and time again.
Valve and Steam get DRM right, why cant anyone else?

More like 30 but yeah. As long as there have been competing consoles there have been wars.

I'm somewhat curious as to what became of Adam Orth.
I certainly don't want such a selfish, unprofessional, and dickish move to go unpunished.
Granted, it is unwarranted to wish ill for someone strictly speaking of their personal opinions; but when you are an employee and passively represent them on behalf of your own actions, there are things you do and do not do. This being one of the latter.

I kinda hope the guy gets fired, that's just professionalism at it's worst with what he pulled...
if it keeps this trend I doubt i'll get the new console from them, as is my 360 is just collecting dust.

Looks like the always on feature might be real. A Microsoft inside claim it is. While this does not prove it 100% I find it weird that someone would supposely has close ties to MS would lie about something which would be pretty damning for MS next-gen and risk losing his insider connections. 2 things.
1 this is still a rumor, although probably true to some extent, I doubt it's as bad as people make it seem. Maybe like first time you play the game you have to authenticate online. You know, it could also be that just the Dev Kits need to be always online, and this whole online panic fest was for nothing.
Also, being a steam gamer for going on 8 years... whats the big deal with an always on connection? I don't see it. Also, it's funny seeing an MMO Community get all up in arms.
I am looking forward to the shitstorm that will happen when PS4 announces that it has no optical drive though.

Valve and Steam get DRM right, why cant anyone else? it's kinda like how everyone wants to make all of these strict gun laws, when really all that does it F' over the honest legal people.
With regards to PS4 it's shady... they arn't saying there is an 'Offline mode' only that you won't require a 'Always on' connection. But how they are going on about the system will not be backwards at all with anything would lead one to believe that everything will be download online only adding fuel to the 'No optical drive' rumors.
Also, a lot if not most steam games require you to be online to some extent to play games.

First of just wanted to say I love console wars. The fact that companys push eachother to be the best ultimately benefits us the most.
I know eventually I will own both or all 3 if you count the Wii U in this. I will own all three cause each system will be great for a certain reason. If you want the best FPS exp. you will pick up a xbox cause no one does that type better. If its RPG then Sony wins hands down.
Not to many people I know only own one console. While you may only buy one on launch most at some point own or owned both. Hell I dont think I have even played my PS3 in 6mo. or better, but I would never think of selling it.
While I am not stating I am for or against MS rumor of an online only console I do find it slightly ironic that this agrument is on the forum for a game that requires internet to play lol.

Microsoft is working on some incredible stuff for the console gaming experience. Here's a trailer, I get chills when he says, "XBOX, go big" and bam, the entire room becomes the game. Check this ***out and Sony and Nintendo can kiss Microsoft's ***.

That's not a good comparison. Imagine if your PC would simply not function if your internet connection dropped. That's what we're talking about here.

So, there is a console-war about to kick off, and a few opening rounds have been fired, with more to come in the ensuing months.
However, one of those rounds fired was aimed straight at the consumer base...huh? Thats right, Microsoft employee Adam Orth, newly crowned hero to Sony/Nintendo fans, spouted off on Twitter last night, attacking, well everyone.
Let me give some background information first. Officially, the next xbox has not been announced and all of the information pertaining to it is strictly "rumored." Two of the biggest rumors are mandatory Kinect ( Lengthy Video) and Always online. ( Always online article)
The always online rumors have really picked up of late, and after the disasterous SimCity launch, fan feedback has been largely negative towards the idea. Hostility amplified with the latest article stating that if the xbox lost internet for 3 minutes, the game would stop and players would no longer be able to play. Again, I stress that these are rumors, and they have been posted by Kotaku, not exactly reliable.
Well ladies and gentleman, hard working Adam Orth did not take too kindly to such hostility, breaking normal company policy and addressing said hostile reactions on twitter. Hilarity ensues: Huh? Even Amandarius makes more sense than this. But he wasn't done, in what will do more for Sony's PS4 than their marketing team could ever do, he posted this response to a Bioware employee:
Quote: "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always-on' console," he said. "Every device is now 'always-on'. #dealwithit" Well then, ok. So far I have been completely neutral regarding next gen, but this was almost enough to push me to pre-ordering a PS4. How is that for dealing with it, Adam?
Microsoft has sense issued an apology: Quote: "We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter." Not a spokesperson, ok, but still an employee, and your name is on his tweets. This is going to be a marketing disaster for Microsoft, I can just see E3 now, Sony rolls out Kevin Butler for an Adam Orth roast. Even if these rumors turn out to not be true, and they are looking more and more credible, else why would an employee even address them, Microsoft has a pretty big hole to climb out of because of this one man. I expect him to resign soon enough, too little too late. IGN Source article. Feel free to discuss, I am going to find a battery operated vacuum cleaner.
Edit - Adam Orth is a Creative Director at Microsoft.
Edited for clarification.
