I think you're making his point for him though Z... If I understand him correctly he believes that the line for a "standard age" should be dropped... But as it is currently at 18... if we're going to keep certain responsibilities and freedoms from them solely based on their age then we should not also then turn around and be able to punish them as adults... I don't think he's arguing against the fact that 17 y/o's don't have that capacity but rather that until we legally recognize it there should not be a double standard...

When seventeen-year-olds have responsibilities such as driving, jobs, taking college preparatory or college courses, I believe they have the metal capacity to understand a simplistic instruction such as "No texting while driving!"

again, you seem to misunderstand that I said that he should be punished, I just disagree with the punishment.

there's no point in ruining a child's life for some sense of punishment because somebody died due to negligence.

there's better ways that can make the best of the situation, prison isn't that "better way".

and not all 17 year olds do that, and even the ones that do don't really have that much of a grasp on life/death, ***'s situational, and typically 17 year olds are still very much children.

As for statutory: again, double standards, they're old enough to go to jail for a bad choice but not old enough to ***? yeah, that makes sense...

Also, I think the punishment fits the crime this case... Not to mention he will most likely get out before the full two years are up...

how does prison (which is known to make criminals out of people) for somebody who is barely 18 a proper fit for this crime?

the no license I can see, but why not put him to use for the society instead of ruining a youth further?

the US has multiplied the amount of people in prison since the mid 80's, and has some of the highest imprisonment rates in the world (not sure if highest) I'm sorry I just don't see the point.

Have you ever been locked up?

Now I'm starting to think that you are going to get audited and she wants you to do soemthing shifty...

Whether or not it "seems" fair.. His actions and negligence resulted in the death of another human being. That person misses out on years of life because one person just didn't care to do things the right way... An accident sure but when you end someone's life you deserve to get a more sever punishment.

And what would be your suggestion for a more constructive punishment?

No I have never been locked up and don't ever plan on it... Seems like it would suck big time.

I'm like really confused now, especially since he hasn't said anything to me about anything.

accidents happen even when one isn't distracted.

what is the purpose of "more punishment" really what purpose does it serve?

"justice"?

I'm sorry but hindering society based upon a false sense of justice is ludicrous.
