It IS pretty complicated, and we pay her every month for the mortgage.

It hurts my head thinking about it.

Edit: In all honesty I want to just live in an apartment, but we'll see.

I was curious about that, and she's absolved of the duties of a landlord?

Rough. Are you being reimbursed or have a deal cut for repairs or updates you make around the property?

Their situation is a bit different than that but same principle... Property taxes are added in to any form of rent but AB and the hubby would not be paying them direct as the house is still in the other persons name.

It depends on the type of agreement they have which would specify her duties as a landlord...

It's not that she's absolved... (she paid for a plumber to come and fix the washer and helped us get the branches off the roof before winter). The deal is as long as we keep the place looking in good condition, she would help us out if any problems arose. It's a nice arrangement.

It's just that boyfriend doesn't want to inconvenience her with every thing that happens.

Then again, the house is in her name, so if she wants to sell it she could, only thing I can think that's going through the boyfriend's head is if we bother her too much she could just kick us out or something (we have no contract/lease, so technically she could).

Like I said, it's complicated, and I think if we didn't have a roommate right now we would have left a while ago.

Well housing news and my stupidity when it comes to laundry aside, the day is going pretty well.

It doesn't sound like a rent-to-own contract, as there doesn't sound like a purchase option is present at any time. An informal 'gifting' option, maybe, but still.
Normally landlords have some sort of obligations legally and contractually, but that obviously will likely depend specifically on the area that the person is living in.

It doesn't really even sound like they have any kind of contract in place. It kinda sounds like they have some sort of informal agreement to me that could be rescinded at any time. Squatters rights!

Contracts are so important when it comes to housing here though because the rules change from place to place (drastically in some cases).

Beyond that... the question that keeps circling around in my head is how the hell long are they going to have to be there to pay this off... yes yes dearie just stay here for another 20 years and keep paying it off and its yours!
