While watching my nephew, who is six now, he was thumbing through our DVR and popped on TWD. I panicked a little, and immediately told him that this was not for him. Apparently, my ex-sister-in-law let's him watch it. I find that a little unsettling for that age.

we were babysitting a kid our eldest's age, 2-3 years ago (that's fairly complicated, sry) & she wanted to watch CSI (or some spinoff, idk, I don't watch those) & said she did all the time. -.-

to each their own, I guess.

Meh...It gives me another reason to piss and moan about my ex-sister-in-law.

Everything Dave does is magic. Even when it's just him and Tim Reynolds and a couple guitars.

Skully, you do restoration. Do you know what's a good price for black mahogany, federal mantels? I'm wondering if they're cheaper in the NE. Do you know the going price for finished and unfinished?

I found something out of Charleston, but it seems overpriced.

Federal-style and yes. It's an extinct wood. My "may as well be my uncle" uncle who does salvage and restoration said that black mahogany, since it's not indigenous to the US and went extinct in the 1800's, it is primarily on the East Coast.

EDIT: Do you run into them frequently?

Hmmmm I have heard something similar like that about Black Walnut.

That being said, Mahagony I think we purchased ohhh 6 years ago, in some veneer sheets. Let me paroose around tho. And you want to restore the mantel instead of replace? Is it missing some corbels or any feature making it not whole?

Oh! I can run through it on my own. I'm just curious as to what region you could find them decently priced as salvage. Replace completely. Client's request (expansion on his law firm; original house built in 1896). He's from Rhode Island and has requested this in the original part of the house, even though this isn't really my forte. Just seeing if we can fulfill that since we're already throwing in the work.

Not a big deal.

EDIT: Just assuming you might have an idea. No big whoop. Trying to oblige.

To that, have not found anything salvaged/reclaimed that people aren't paying through the nose.

Best bet really is to do that. Even a Joe Schmo can install those unlike a restore needs a good carpenter.

The simple ones yes! We use plain ole primed finger joint pine or sometimes poplar. Always paint grade. THe ONE restore Mantel job we did, was a Mantle at a Historic House of Baltimore's famous Poet. Prety old, when we pulled it off to bring to our shop to restore, that only thing holding it together was the termites arms. XD

My idea would be, don't go with restore unless you don't mind some mcguyvering (making pieces to match existing and maybe with different species)and the skill and time to do so.

Added extra note, restore jobs are always fun. Carpenters can do anything if willing. We restored some door leafs on an old nun-dorm that is now a catholic school. Those pair of doors were 4' wide by 9' tall and 3" thick. Sweet tundering lord were they the heaviest things ever.

Sorry not much more of a halp there lady.

I don't cause it is a HUGE pain in the ***, but personally, yes I love it. I do love working with wood and taking my time to build/modify/fix things. But I also know I am a procrastinator and it would all go faster if I pay someone to do something for me. Biggest case of this is oil changes/brake pad changes.

Gonna go with Apple. They are trying to make adaptations for Car use and some Medical devices. The fear or Apple becoming Skynet is rising!

But I will keep Samsung on alert too, for I forgot where they come from.

Yeah...TY for the info anyhow.

I knew it was a lofty request, and I'm not sure why it was made. It seems the best solution would be to have millwork contacted to see if they have anyone talented enough to build a recreation, or have something similar found in salvage and stained. Superfluous aesthetics anyway completely unrelated to the project at hand.
