our take home pay was forty seven cents, a frisbee, three joints, an earring, some cigarettes and the beer we drank while we were there....

to be fair, they were going to pay you 50.00$USD but the beer you hooligans drank up totaled 49.53....

yes, but I don't get much of a chance to anymore.

That and unlike when I was younger, apparently the water likes to go up my sinus cavity and give me one hell of a headache, guess I shouldn't have had that deviated septum fixed 10 years ago.

I would no dare swim in any of the local bodies of water near my residence. Only place I would that's near by is a reservoir, but it has reports of Rabid Beaver attacks. No thanks.

Black people?

I'm not even being racist: there's a very strange cultural taboo at the heart of why African-Americans regularly do not learn how to swim and, thereby, have a certain phobia of water deeper than 1'.

I thought it goes back to imposing Jim Crow laws, restrictions on public facilities, etc. I could be wrong though.

I've read some African-American scholars posit that it is some holdover from slavery to prevent escapees from being able to get across rivers and lakes. Given slavery only ended about 150 years ago, it's not the most outrageous thing I've ever heard.

That said, when I was growing up, all the city pools were filled with dark-skinned folk. You had to get into some of the super-white suburbs to find a free or nearly-free public pool with pale people like me in it.

Hmmm...That makes sense. 150 years is a blip in time too. Enough for a few generations to lose the instinct, I suppose.

Anyone here ever actually taught someone to swim? My neighbor growing up had never been taught (I was born on the Atlantic coast, I learned to swim in the *** North Atlantic Current) and asked me to help him. I didn't turn him into Michael Phelps, but if he falls in water today, he's unlikely to drown.

my biggest complaint about the local pool is that it's old, and the city has multiplied in size a lot since it was built, and they really just need to build another one or two, as it's always overpopulated.

That was when I went regularly, I hadn't checked the population counts in a bit, but I imagine it's only gotten worse.

Most of the pools people here in NYC now have access to were built specifically for whites and are effectively hand me downs now the original inhabitants of the neighborhoods have all gone out to Long Island to be crushed under heroin and drug addiction.

During the Public works boom of the 50s our generous overlord Robert Moses built these public places away from the undesirables, uprooted/fractured a ton of neighborhoods to build our freeways and designed these new roadways in a manner that separated people from access to the rivers where people once swam. You know, if you like swimming in polluted streams that have become Superfund sites. Seeing people fish (and not release) in the East River today still sends my stomach into a state of tailspin.

Many of our roadways hug the shoreline as well and swimming in pretty deep areas when you can't swim is a great way to end up gargle, gargled.

When NYC went bankrupt in the 70s many of the public pools went into a state of disrepair which also happened to coincide with the racial shift in many neighborhoods so there is also that.

I love when people talk about drug problems in the inner city. The ***gets manufactured and sold in the white middle-class suburbs. Hell, your best bet for a hook-up as a teenager is to find the local Catholic school full of rich kids.

Ironically, gentrification now means the suburbs are full of brown people and downtown is increasingly pale, so maybe things are changing.
