There is a reason for fax machines still be used. Unlike email, you can confirm the fax was successfully received. This can be important for time sensitive business transactions. Fax machines provide a log of when faxes were sent and if they were sent successfully, whereas email only confirms the message was sent, but not received.
That being said, I still hate them with a passion.

I just think it's a bunch of rubbish. HIPAA has its roots in a very important issue: patient safety and privacy. But it needs to get with the current century, let alone decade. There are ways to obtain medical records instantaneously; there is no (good) reason that many places still won't even take electronic signatures, let alone electronic requests...some places won't even take faxes. You always hear about medical advancements due to technology, but it's laughable how far behind medical record keeping and office technology is compared to treatment methods. Don't get me wrong, if it has to be either-or, give me the updated treatment and antiquated book keeping. But I see no good reason why we can't have both.
