Maybe it is due to the hiatus and recent lack of involvement, but it seems to be particularly pointless and poisonous of late.
No, that's my impression as well, and I'm mired in it.
It's gotten worse, and I'm looking for ways to fix it that aren't "keep banning people until morale improves". We could try an ad campaign.
Turns out, spooning is not when you beat someone over the head with a wooden spoon.

There's just a lot of people on all sides that don't actually want to discuss politics so much as they want to get a reaction out of people.
And that's why P&R is only good for jokes at this point. It's become that repulsive in nature, or I'm less patient now. Maybe both?
Saw the word "feels" one too many times. It's just not worthwhile.
There's no "discussion." Just braying back and forth and a lot of vitriol.
Yeah, there's good-natured tail-yanking, then there's overkill.
I don't know if it's the sheer lunacy of this election cycle, but the momentary, cross-table, collective chuckles are at an all time low.
EDIT: Admittedly, it's become so bad that I've thought of hitting the report button a few times (even on the behalf of people I'm necessarily partial to) and talked myself out of it.

Report things. There's a number of people who don't report things because they don't want to feel thin-skinned/bother staff with it, which ends up with people skating far longer than they should.
Not nipping stuff early is what leads to bigger problems.

That's pretty much when I bailed too, actually. You know my feelings on reporting folks. The constant barely-veiled juvenile insults every time someone disagrees with you are just too much. Once it got to the point where I'm like, "yeah...should I report that?" I just stopped going. If you have to ask, it's not worth your time, regardless of the answer.
I haven't been around here so much either, but that's more an issue of being busy at work the past couple of weeks. Lots of crazy new ***they're making us do.

Report things. There's a number of people who don't report things because they don't want to feel thin-skinned/bother staff with it, which ends up with people skating far longer than they should.
Not nipping stuff early is what leads to bigger problems. I was unfairly ban'd the last time I reported some jerk for dicking up a thread!

ffX is way more cutscene heavy than I had recalled, but the story is nice, & that's been fun. Do not forget to pick up Valefor's solar attack when leaving Besaid. If you don't want to permamently kill the Dark Aions but still want to have all attacks for every character you will need to backtrack after unlocking Jecht-spheres.

- me walking around with a bazooka until the culture changes
- the complete destruction of the section
I don't want to do either of those things, but I am rapidly running out of ideas. I am actively embarrassed by the behavior that goes on in there at times, and don't really want my name associated with it.
The P+R section can serve as a nice "current events" section, and when things are going well, it can actually be an enlightening place to be. The problem is that it usually isn't going well. Help me fix it!

my armchair psychologist analysis indicates some pretty heavy and serious abandonment issues and early childhood trauma.
and I realize I am ME so I get it that people are reluctant to take my advise in the real world. But never the less I always hold out hope he will read something that helps him find someone to talk too about this.
maybe ask the family doctor for a referral at the next check up. if your insurance covers it why not go in for a quick tune up and a once over just make sure all your pistons are firing in the right cylinders etc etc etc

Real answer: a more defined set of rules for PR
As you said debate is good and more than encouraged but if things are really devolving that often/quickly then things need to be set down. Yes, it may lead to an increased load for a short time but in the long run it will likely be far better for both the community and the mods to have something more concrete to work with when specifically dealing with the PR section since it's such a different beast compared to the rest of the forums.

Since we all can't be on the same linkshell in game, this can be our cross server linkshell thread.
Like most linkshells, it can be pretty dead at times. Other times it's full of intense conversations about either rl, gear, goals, pokemon or anything else you want to contribute.
We can cover any sort of topic at all, within reason of the forum rules. No real main topic, just a bunch of FFXIAH friends/people coming on and discussing random things.

Alyria is the most social female, gets groped a lot without provoking it by others, and Tairo ends up stabbing people for it. Cai is just a barrel of lols, I might be gay for him. If I wasn't straight.
Not sure about Citag, s/he's new. Kiriyu is just an in-out kinda person. Says one thing every three days that every guy makes a big fuss over. Ludoggy gets really defensive since she's asian and underage (might be 18 now).
Artem is the wayward soul that makes you ponder the meaning of life by constantly reminding us life can suck. But he deals, and so do we. About the same for Savannah, except people are more "AWH!" to her because of a vagina involved.
Dasva is the ex military man (as is Krizz but this doesn't apply to him) who hates the world and plots a way to destroy most of it.
Number2 is kinda like a mix between Cai and I; never bashes, likes to laugh and has odd avatars. His current suits a lot of the convos this LS gets into. Barti is most well known for his moustache. He gives mousatche rides for a fee. I'm missing a few people but whatever. CARRY ON!
