I doubt he "hates" Americans. It is a culture shock for some, depending on where you move to in the US. My mom has a treasure trove of Idiot American anecdotes going back to her move state-side during the bicentennial year.

I am aware of how it was meant, it's just a minor problem of the the meaning of the word respect itself. It is today a positive labeled word in a time of humanism where it has actually become the neutral basis (respect life has become the norm). Since we cannot climax respect directly, only negate it, a discrepancy has been created which lead to both sayings being possible.
I did not negate the saying for you, just for me in my previous post. Just wanted to state and add my personal approach on the word.
