Ok, iirc one of you guys are an engineer of some sort or have experience in construction. Help me try to understand this quagmire of an idea that was unleashed upon us today.

Guy we're working for is having us build a pad and pour the floor for a 30x50 metal building.

So you would think "ok, 5-6 trusses spanning 30'" right? WRONG the building guy wants to do three 50' trusses with no support pillars in the middle.

Now my thoughts are primarily "What?" and what about strength? 6 30' trusses will be stronger and at a better angle to shed snow and ice than 3 50' trusses...and then there's the fact that the center truss is spanning 50' with no support in the middle and it will look terrible.

Wtf is this guy thinking?

What type of truss does the client have in mind? Flat, scissor etc?

Did you guys inquire which roof span table they are basing this off of?

Just the usual triangular arch trusses made out of red iron. That's all I've ever seen used in this application.

From a clean engineering/physics perspective: Not enough info.

What materials are used; how are the trusses supported (what is the load transference); what is the maximum steady state load; what is the maximum dynamic force expected?

In most cases, building code for the region takes out the engineering and simply gives rules to adhere to, so it's good practice to simply refer to that.

been bored since the weekend, games cant really grab a hold of me for some reason.

started watching backlog of dvds (bluerays to be technical) that I have gotten but had yet to see.

started watching the X-Files special miniseries that came out earlier this year. good stuff.

Mulder is still cool as ***, Scully, remember having a crush on her, seems to have aged well, would still crush on her.

The fact that I never see this setup with the exception of small 1950's back yard storage buildings implies it's not a very good idea. I don't know the specifics, I do concrete but the idea sounds like a bad one to me.

Quote:
A 70-year-old man charged with robbing a Kansas City, Kan., bank said he did it because he preferred a jail cell over living with his wife.

So I'm slightly under the impression this guy is related to Nik.
