I've come to learn, as we now apparently have office cats, that I am not a cat person. I just like my cat.

I had dogs/puppies growing up, and loved them, but cats are so much lower maintenance. Dogs are a lot more work just from a planning perspective - can't go out of town, even a long day out of the house requires some forethought. A cat, though? "What the *** ever, humans, I didn't want you around anyway".

To me it's just that...raising someone with your hands, taking care of them their whole life because they're helpless alone and need you, and then seeing them die and bury them cause they don't outlive you...for me it's a pain I wouldn't be able to get through and I'd never want to, which is why I've never wanted a pet even though I love animals.

Kids can turn out the same way, people keep trying to tell me I should have those! ಠ_ಠ

Not gonna lie, this is another of my reasons for a cat; they just live so much longer, especially if you keep them indoors.

This is the pragmatic reason I don't have a dog right now despite really wanting one. A dog may as well be a child as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't be one of those grating "dog parents" you see around, but a dog or a child, regardless, is another life I'm responsible for and I'm simply not prepared for that commitment right now. Man's best friend deserves the attention of a best friend, and I can't give that right now.

I'm surprised I don't see that reasoning more for not getting a pet.

Even talking to the GF she talks about how much she hates the idea of a pet dying etc, but then she wants a bunch of animals. Just seems so counterproductive.

That said, death happens.

im getting attached to the stupid iguana and when he dies it's gonna suck. luckily he can live to be 25-30 years old

so with any luck he'll outlive me. i should just get one of those giant 120 year old parrots. or a sea turtle.

Related anecdote.

Those parrots get attached to their owners and the opposite of a pet dying happens. Their owner dies and they get really ornery.

My brother has a friend that adopted a pair from an old woman who died, and while the birds behave around their adopted owner, whenever my brother (or anyone else) goes over to visit they raise holy hell.

I don't know how anyone deals with long lived pets either.

x.x

Maybe I just have a horrible attention span/care for things over long periods of time. I love the idea of short lived things and hate the idea of anything living for 15+ years.

Gah!

Long story short, boss' mother moved to nursing home and couldn't take cats.

Cats in office now.

The one cat sits outside my office and all the time I hear "OMG LOOK AT THE CUTE KITTY! AREN'T YOU JUST A SWEET THING, YES YOU ARE. YES YOU ARE." etc. etc.

Like I said. I like MY cat.

well slippy is easy. costs like $3 worth of greens a week to feed and takes little maintenance, clean his house out once a month or so and he happy as a clam.

Yeah. I maintain the joy pets bring to your life makes up for by far the big bump you'll likely face at the end.

I have a very huge issue with separation. Ever since I was a child and I only had to say goodbye to dad for 5 days until the next time I'd be with him.
I can't let go of friends.
I can't even let go of enemies.
Sometimes I can't let go of material things too, but that's probably greed.
I don't think I have the emotional stability to get through the loss of someone I raised.

Mmm. Maybe. Maybe not.

Sometimes once you attach an emotional value to a thing, or associate it with someone or something which has said value, it's difficult to get rid of even if it doesn't make any logical sense.

no offense, but shuddering yourself off isn't really helping a whole bundle either...

you can experience the joy and happiness of life and the pain and sadness of death

or you can live in fear and experience nothing else.

Bolded is the one that really worries me from what you're describing, given it can make leaving potentially harmful situations difficult. The others are understandable and I hope as time goes on you're able to open yourself up more to new experiences. Everyone's got their hills to climb.

I don't really know what to recommend beyond perhaps a therapist or counselor if you don't already see one. But not being able to divorce yourself from upsetting or toxic situations can be really problematic.

We all have this issue apparently since we all keep coming back to Ni.
