As I've said before, the Old Testament is just a bunch of oral stories and traditions that were passed down generation to generation until they were written down. The laws and rules they speak about are merely just things that "worked" for those people, in that environment at that time. When you are a group of semi-nomadic tribes moving around and living a harsh life, those things are actually needed to be functional.
