Institutional homosexuality is not homosexuality. It is, however, a very well-documented and well-understood phenomenon.

Some of it is traditional fagging: you become subordinate to someone who'll show you the ropes and/or keep you safe. In this and other ways, prison and traditional English boarding schools (to say nothing of American Ivy League universities a century ago) are similar.

Some institutional homosexuality is just because there are no women around. Whether it's what you'd want in other circumstances, a wet hole is better than nothing.

Sometimes it's even just the price-of-admission to get some desperately needed human contact. Camaraderie in prisons is difficult and potentially dangerous, but all humans need some kind of contact. It's the whole reason why solitary confinement is basically the only mandated torture left on the books: it's torturous, but just barely mild enough.

What doesn't happen is institutional homosexuality turning into actual homosexuality.

Moreover, the notion of consent in most of those cases is very dubious. If my choice is between having all my teeth knocked out and my limbs and ribs regularly broken or bending over so that Bubba will protect me, is that really a choice and is that really consent? Probably not.

Engaging in homosexual acts doesn't make one homosexual. It doesn't even make one bisexual. I know more than a few homosexual men and women who have biological children the old-fashioned way: via heterosexual intercourse. That they could force themselves to do that, for whatever reason, doesn't alter the fact that, in a social vacuum with freedom of choice, they never pursue opposite sex people.

The notion that one mere act of homosexuality immediately (or ever) alters someone is nonsense. Any man who has ever watched porn and suddenly experienced a more intense erection when the male actor pulls out his ridiculously large penis could be credibly accused under such an arbitrary and absolutist doctrine. And most men will have that reaction from time to time, same as women getting turned on by other women from time to time. Most hormonal middle schoolers can get turned on by reading the word "sex" in the dictionary, but that hardly makes them bibliophiliac fetishists.

Obama be like:

If that's what it takes to stop us using the prison system, I will happily campaign that prison turns all men into dress-wearing, limp-wristed poofters suitable only to wait tables, make catty comments on A&E reality shows, and serve in the US Congress.
