Given the highest rate in the country per that page (Iowa) doesn't even make it into -- to carry the school theme -- "A" range (B+ to B, depending on your school's rating system), there isn't a single state in the Union that isn't revolting in the category. ^^;
And given the low standards of poor distrcts and the tendency for kids to be "pushed through", those numbers are probably already inflated.

Well, got any ideas for this sweeping reform then that doesn't involve handing control to a more powerful band of morons?

Oddly enough, I saw a lot of low cost-per-student states with good graduation rates. The correlation between spending there is poor. Except graduation requirements are also determined at the state level.
Which is kind of insane.

We're straying a tad from the point, though. You have to justify taking control away from the states and giving it to our ever-bloating, ever-inefficient national government.
yeah because they did so well with all of the other things we entrusted them to do
The same could be said of the federal. What's your point?
I was talking about the federal government...
so...my point is the federal government sucks and has never even seen a problem it couldn't turn into a major catastrophe by looking at it.

If upending the entire system is truly too idyllic, then yeah. Take it all the way down to individual districts.
I mean, local government is corrupt as *** and normally full of hillbillies who work part-time while they're away from their hardware store, but hey. At least the federal government won't be messing it up, amirite?

Might as well make it unique per school, no? It doesn't necessarily help to justify one extreme by using another extreme. I'm still waiting for ideas.

I see no problem in completely reworking the way schools in this country operate to be more in line with more successful countries in this area.
But then we'd have to admit that America is bad at something. And you want to talk about political death...

Oh, yeah. Waving a flag and a gun and a bible is such a rebel statement. A real dagger in the heart of political correctness.
(Well, waving a Rebel flag and a gun and a bible is a statement...specifically, that statement is "my sister is my mother", but that's not the point really.)
But really. If "politically correct" is so damned important, then why do so many politicians cater to the Bible/Flag/Gun crowd?
Oh wait, yeah.
Because sadly, they're still an extremely influential part of the electorate.
Which speaks volumes about America, really.
The tactic of acting the victim when you're the majority/controlling group is getting really old in this country.

So the argument is that the state level is the Goldilocks' zone of morons? (doesn't seem like the right word, but I don't think moronism or moronosity are actually words)
You'll get idiots distributed throughout the spectrum. There's significant benefit towards standardization of a core of what should be taught.
Consider what impact that has for families in the military, let alone anyone else that travels in the US.
I mean, come on, why is this even necessary:
http://www.dodea.edu/Partnership/interstateCompact.cfm
So you have children while serving in the US military, a side benefit is that your kids probably get screwed educationally whenever you are relocated to another state.

And yet somehow the "Common Core" is seen as an abomination to people on opposite political ends. The government sucks at sweeping reform, and it has proven it time and time again.

Social mobility or not, politicians care about this little thing called reelection. If your state guts education, you can elect better leaders.
Have you looked at state elections recently? A large portion run unopposed, even more only ever face minor competition, and the rest just rework the districts at will to curb any chance of competition.
Yeah, and how many of those states have gutted education to the degree Ramy is so afraid of? If you're so gung-ho about passing off control of education to a centralized government, you're going to have to do more than scare people with hypotheticals. Again I'm baffled, as a libertarian, shouldn't he see the problem of state legislators do a bad job as having the solution of elect better state legislatures"? Nope he says that because you can't trust the state, we outta instead give oversight to the feds where instead of driving the 10 year old minivan of a state government, we're driving the 50 year old 18 wheeler.
The solution to this shitty big state government where nothing gets done is an even bigger shittier federal government!.

Using missiles... now that's something that our government is good at. Taking advice from Snidely Whiplash? That's also something that our government is probably good at. We're getting somewhere.

Oddly, I love how France is always the butt of a joke when we wouldn't exist as a country without them.
I mean, they didn't help out of the kindness of their hearts, their own benefits were certainly there, but the fact remains.
Without the the American Revolution would have gone a bit differently.

The examples of capitalism gone wrong only exist in movies (fantasy). Meanwhile the examples of communism gone wrong are numerous and plenty.

Then what's the answer? Libertarians seem to think all government is bad, and everything should be privatized. Which is clearly idiotic when it comes to schools. Almost as much so as it is with jails.
Though come to think of it, that's probably what's going to happen. If there's one thing our government loves it's privatizing things and then selling those contracts in exchange for campaign donations.

Yeah. You're right.
Red Dawn is the totally accurate and natural expectation of an socialist endeavor, and the entirety 17th-19th centuries/the Industrial Revolution never happened. Only the good things count. The bad things were just the cost of progress.

Yeah, what is the answer? The lazy way out is to see someone doing something wrong and chucking it in the lap of someone known to do lots of other things wrong, pretending that it'll be okay this time.

Funding and curriculum should be completely independent. That's the concept behind tenures. I'm not trying to scare anyone with hypotheticals, there is a very big difference between the way the DoE is funded and the way schools are, and lawmakers rarely pay a price for cutting funding since the effects are increasingly offset by other sources.
Don't start reading between the lines, you're smarter than that.

I already told you what, in this instance, I think the answer is. Take a cue from some of our European allies who have their ***together when it comes to education and restructure our own system to be in line with theirs.
