So I was looking to take advantage of this return to vanadiel and come back to the game after 3 years of not playing... however when I download the game, when I finally got past all the updates, my computer freezes every single time on a screen asking me to install DirectPlayer, does anyone know what I should/can do? I'd love to rejoin you all!

You need to install/activate DirectPlay in order for ffxi to work.

Try the following;

Open Control Panel
Open Programs
Open Programs and Features
Turn Windows Features on or off
Open Legacy Components
Make sure DirectPlay is checked.
