Pampering with pity? Three generations of my family and my wife all immigrated here legally, none from any Latin country, either. I have no pity or sympathy for people who enter the us illegally or overstay visas. I'm looking at the problem in a broader context than assumption and ineffectual phallic symbols.

I didn't say anything of that sort. What I said was that a wall will not stem the flow on its own. In fact, plenty of countries have essentially no physical borders and don't have the trouble we do. This isn't dynastic China.

It used to be that if you could work, you could get in. Many people's families got here at a point in history where the biggest obstacle to citizenship was simply getting here. What DO we attribute America's diversity to then if not US immigration law? We're diverse due to illegals? Maybe by mistake? Or possibly the diversity came from forging documents? I was only addressing your one argument of how current ("atm") policy somehow explains our current diversity. It doesn't. I said nothing about current laws making it impossible. 2. Immigration laws fluctuated in terms of being strict v relaxed. Example Chinese Exclusionary Act (strict) and open door policy to Koreans post Korean War (relaxed). It's all based on agendas of the era.

If we wanted to fix illegal immigration as an issue we need to fix our foreign policies in respect to how we create instability in regions forcing people to flee to stable nations that aren't in chaos.
