I couldn't find the old thread, so making a new one.

Reminder that AGDQ 2016 starts on January 3rd, 2016 and will run until January 10th, 2016.

Here's a link to the schedule: https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule

http://www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick

What is AGDQ?

Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level play by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities in its five-year history, such as Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Last year's thread for the curious. But since it's time for this year's, might as well have a new thread.

Meh for FF4 finale, but it can't be FF6/Chrono Trigger every time I guess.

Looking forward to kaizo mario3. Hopefully we get the super glitched out FF6 run they promised us last year in the summer.

I was just looking up the schedule so I could update and bump the old one, but this works :)

Very excited!

Should be the Prevent Cancer Foundation. AGDQ is typically PCF, SGDQ is DWB.

Pretty good line up, though I have to agree that the FFIV part won't have a great impact.

Need some more details.

Like does everyone play the game or games they want and get sponsors or are you sponsoring specific people and/or groups? How do donations work, etc.?

Only thing I see is the on the AGDQ link:
Quote:
Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 is coming up soon! Starting on January 3rd, 2016, at Herndon, VA, the event will once again be benefitting the Prevent Cancer Foundation! Registration for AGDQ2016 is now CLOSED! See our attend page for more information on attending and hotel reservations!

I guess that means registration is closed, for teams I guess or event attendance... Anyway some quick links to donate, etc. would be appreciated. Not really interested in attending or playing (well not this time, lol, only just heard about this), just watching and donating.

Looking at the schedule I'd toss in a few $'s to watch someone beat Half-Life 2 on the hardest mode and some classic Super Castlevania IV, speed run I take it?

Short answer is that anyone wanting to do a run sends a video application demonstrating their ability and the SDA staff decide what runners are good on camera and do interesting runs. There are usually a couple donation incentives, like mario 64 will be scheduled as a 70 star run, and if enough donations are made, it will be a 120 star.

You can donate directly to the event, toward a specific goal, or leave it up to the current runner to decide.

Check out the Speed Demos Archive Youtube channel to see some previous GDQ runs. It's become a pretty professional event, usually pulling down more Twitch traffic than everything else beside pro MOBA tournaments.

The game itself is taken into consideration. No matter how good or interesting you make a run, if your game of choice is something nobody has heard of, it wont bring in viewers and thus wont bring in as many donations.

Known titles definitely bring in more viewers, but they've had plenty of lesser known games that are done by known runners or are very interesting to watch.

Ok cool, so that's kinda one part explained, but how do you donate and how does the donation process work? Does it occur live when they stream, do you pay on progress or completion? I'm just guessing it varies on the game and challenge, but do you have to setup some kind of account on twitch?

I ask because here in Serbia I tried to donate to AVGN live stream on YouTube's streaming services, but it's currently not allowed from here using their feature. Using PayPal is usually the most universal and easiest method I use internationally for just about everything payment related when it comes to small amounts of money (less than $10,000).

GDQ had paypal as an option when I've donated, but it's been a few years since I donated during a GDQ.

Ok, cool. Hopefully it's still an option. I can't imagine removing such a versatile option.

Yeah, but you never know what kind of headaches it could cause now. PayPal went to a really buyer centric contested payment policy.

On an up note, looks like they'll have even more good donation prizes this year. Last year was sponsored by alienware and they gave out a few gaming pc's.

AGDQ 2015 prizes

SGDQ 2015 prizes

There's always a minimum donation for each prize.

That really is why I love GDQ's. You get to see some really interesting stuff and obscure games and people who have dedicated a large amount of time to dissect their mechanics and find ways to exploit them.

It's like a social experiment.

I've watched most of these the past few years and every time I can't help but cringe at how awkward most of the people are.
