Belgium's sales taxes are VAT. It's charged weird depending on the level of process associated with it.

And charging a sales tax on food? What are you, animals?

You don't have a problem drinking, unless you constantly miss your mouth.

Here the government holds your hand and does it for you.

You forgot to add "while taking it's cut".

Government bureaucracies are by definition inefficient as they become subject to the tragedy of the commons. The administrators who run those social programs have no incentive to manage them well and instead will do the absolute minimum necessary to keep their secure jobs. Individually we have a far greater incentive to manage them properly as it directly impacts us individually and we can actually see where our money is going.

Its funny how words like progressive and liberale are dirty words on here. If I'd have to place myself in the political spectrum I'd probably be burned at the stake in this thread.

US Liberal / Conservative is really different from European Liberal / Conservative. The only similar term is Progressive and that's in reference to the Global Progressive movement, as in "world citizenship", "multi-cultism to replace nationalism" and "labor class unite to overthrow capital owning class". Many European Countries have immigration policies that would curdle Zero's toes.

Does Belgium have a political party that not only encourages illegal mass immigration to your country from poorer countries, but wants to give citizenship and voting rights to all those illegal immigrants so they could vote for that same party? European Countries tend to handle illegal immigration pretty harshly.
You cant compare that, Belgium doesnt border to a non EU country, People from our surrounding countries are not seen as illegal immigrants. Our socialist party gave legal immigrants the right to vote though (bout a decade ago) in the aftermath you could say this was a move to get more voters for said party.
And I think the fact that we treat our illegal immigrants harshly is because they can get wellfare and social security from almost day 1 that they arrive in the country.

So you admit to having your countries immigrant problem taken care of by others? The English would like to have a word about illegal immigrants and it's effect on their economy. Also in the USA illegal immigrants do take advantage of our welfare programs. They don't exactly walk up and announce "hey I'm here illegally but I'd like to have welfare", instead everyone just assumes their legal since we've never really had a need to prove citizenship. The USA doesn't have a national ID card or any sort of national citizens registry, and with 50 different states it's possible for someone from one state to move to another and be incapable of presenting any form of authentic ID. Drivers licenses are the closest thing we have and those are managed by each State individually, though many now connect their computer systems.

This is an actual political issue in the USA now. Evil conservatives want states to start checking for valid citizenship before authorizing welfare while Saintly Progressives want to make it illegal for anyone to question someone about their citizenship. In the USA there is estimated to be between 11.5 and 12 million illegal aliens, which is slightly more then the total population of your country. The USA's southern border is immense and easily crossed thus anyone from Central or South America can just walk across it and start moving around. Imagine if your country bordered India or Pakistan and millions of them entered into your country illegally and one of your major political parties was not only calling you racist for wanting to eject them, but demanding you accept their culture as superior to your own and that your a bad person for not acknowledging it.

The UK as far as I understood from British friends, mainly have a problem with European immigrant, Polish people settling in the UK and driving up the prices of housing. Polish people arent seen as illegal immigrants.

Nope I'm trying to bake cookies, which will prolly fail, used to much eggwhite /facepalm.

Sales taxes...thats the percentage taxes they add to every product being sold? If its that, we pay 21% here on most things (cept bread, milk, basic stuff, thats 6%)
even electricity and water we pay 21% atm (which is an outrage)

If your sales tax is that high then whats your income tax, or better yet whats your employers required income tax liability? Some nations are so heavily taxed that the employer pays maybe half to the government as it does the employee for their "tax".

Ex: Your salary is $50,000 USD per year

But your employer is required to pay an additional $25,000 USD to the government as an "employment tax". This means your actual salary would be $75,000 USD. Further your government is taxing you 50% real on that salary and thus are getting $50,000 USD per year for you.

Quote:
Employment income is also subject to social security contributions. Employee contributions are 13.07% and are deducted by the employer. In addition, the employer contributes about 35% of employees wage.[3] No ceiling for contributions apply on contributions for either employee and employer

Wasn't far off, 48% additional tax on top of the 50% Belgium already charges.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_Belgium

A good way to tell what a country is really doing with it's tax is how much tax revenue vs GDP.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_revenue_as_percentage_of_GDP

If we dig further we find that Belgium (just because it's a topic for comarison here) spends almost nothing on national security. Anyone that wanted to take your land and oppress your people is free to do so without even a token of resistance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

Belgium is a member of NATO and not only a member but a founding member.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_NATO

Your national security is protected by other NATO nations, which means it's protected by the USA basically, the same country we're comparing your social programs to.

http://federal-budget.insidegov.com/l/119/2016

There we have the USA spending, of which ~15%, $541 Billion USD, is military related. Of the Tax revenue ~82% are from the citizens employment (Employer Payroll + Required Withholdings).

Essentially the US Tax payers are paying money to support your national defense so you don't have to and instead can spend that money on your own social programs. Now the US could do the same, cut our military spending from $541bn down to $200bn and still have more then adequate military to protect ourselves. We could take that $300bn+ extra and use it to fund all sorts of amazing social programs or even pay down the national debt. Unfortunately it would mean all those European Socialist countries would have to gut their own welfare programs and provide for their own national defenses.

Think long and hard about the reality that US tax payers are funding European national defense and that giant expenditure is the reason your not speaking Russian.

I have British friends that would attest to the opposite. The entire Brexit situation was caused by the EU attempting to force Britain to accept people they didn't want to accept.

Anyone who practices good financial stewardship (I know such an evil Jewish concept) will do just fine. Of course that requires hard work and actually learning how money and the economy works.

What we end up with is two distinct groups of people. The first has the will and drive to work their ***'s off, educate themselves on how to succeed and has the discipline to follow through on financial plans. The second wants to do the bare minimum to get by, then sit at home and be entertained by a TV. The first is extremely tired of the second leaching off of them. The second see's the first as a better alternative then having to do things for themselves.

http://www.torontosun.com/2017/03/15/political-correctness-on-campus-must-end

Political correctness on campus must end

Quote:
More people are finally taking a stand against political correctness on campuses. It’s long overdue.

Last week, the Toronto Sun told the story of Josephine Mathias, a fourth-year student who took to YouTube to speak out against an incident her sister had with an instructor.

Her sister was interested in writing a paper on the gender wage gap. She was planning to argue from the perspective that it was a myth. This is a hotly contested issue with a great amount of research behind it. Therefore it’s perfect fodder for undergraduate students to tackle.

But the instructor wouldn’t have it. “Perhaps you want to write your paper on the glass ceiling,” the instructor responded. “You need to look at feminist sources on this issue.. Do NOT use business sources. They blame women. The reality is patriarchy.”

She also discouraged the use of Statistics Canada data.

Mathias fired back at the instructor and others like her: “They have no facts. They have no tangible explanations or solutions for anything. All the sources or all the information they know comes from feminist literature that’s not even correct.”

Professor Jordan Peterson has made national headlines by refusing to use gender-neutral pronouns in his classroom and criticizing the rise of political correctness on Canadian university campuses.

He attracts large crowds wherever he goes and recently suggested action to curb the erosion of free speech within our institutions of higher learning:

“Cut the university funding by 25% until they sort themselves out. I’d starve them because some decisions have to be made. But failing that, people have to wake up and understand where they’re sending their children.”

Post-secondary institutions receive significant funding from governments. Education is a top provincial expense. We’re being taxed to fund the status quo. We’re going into debt because of it. The system needs to change.

Canada’s leftist elites are demonizing the emerging populism in our own country. Echo-chamber academics and brainwashed social justice warriors have plenty of opinions, but little appetite for debate, reason or compromise.

If universities won’t root out the destructive political correctness, we can cut departmental budgets and use it to lower tuition fees.

That dose of reality might restore reason to our campuses.
Political Correctness must die. Students cannot help shape the future if they do not live in the reality of the present.

Who said anything was bad about Belgium? Since you were from Belgium and using that as a comparison point I decided to stay with you and contrast how your social system is made possible by another nation.

It's important because it's actually one of the reasons (among many) Trump got elected, getting other nations (including Belgium) to pay more of NATO's defense budget. US citizens are really getting tired of paying taxes to enable European citizens to insult and criticize us for not being as "Progressive" as them, while we pay for their Progressiveness.

I dont know mister (?) I think your tone was kind of rude. Here I was browsing the net while waiting to serve plates and I get 10 wiki facts thrown at my head about things I actually do know and which is food for people who studied military and political history.
While I'm just a simple winewaiter, Its lovely made being look stupid.
In the end I discuss to gain knowledge, but less in a way that I have to feel bad of any decision that ever was made over my ancestors heads.
The last you can say is that I'm a patriot but respect and eing polite is a big thing for me.

Unfortunately if everything you "learn" must make you feel good then your scope of knowledge will permanently remain limited. Life is full of uncomfortable truths that shape our worldview.

Then you absolutely couldn't be a liberal in the USA. They frequently burn national flags and generally hate their own US in favor of European countries. The consider all forms of patriotism as oppression and hate speech, they have gone so far as to ban the national flag on university campus's. I'm not exaggerating on this, the ***is that real.
