The last Freshly Picked Vana'diel just repeated the original list of content that relate to Mastery Rank (original official forum response about what affects Mastery Rank). No apparent mention of whether stuff that predates the November 2020 update (introduction of the Mentor License) or stuff that came after is part of this new criteria though.
These ones predate the Nov 2025 update (not exhaustive of course):
I haven't worked on this in over 2 years, but still on Mastery Rank 7 after the update (still under 500 RoE completed, still under 900 titles, no chocobo digging, no fishing, a little Monstrosity)
Still 8 here, but friend jumped from 7 to 8 on login.
Will be interesting to see what common ground these r9s have, Apart from a escutcheon (plz no), the latest couple of master trials and 2 mog garden titles (over a year away from them, lol) I don't really have anything meaningful left to do apart from let my game time rack up...
I have reinstalled, but will have to go through the 17 billion hour update process before I can see if I dinged rank 9. Will post here when I see if I am. Have all monstrosity monsters @ 99 so lets see how much monstrosity matters, lol
I have sortie boss clears of maybe the top floor bosses, and access to the basement. Can't remember if I ever did basement bosses.
And did not finish TVR, as the final chapter wasn't out just yet, but I was up to.... (double checks)... the end of part 9, which is where you unlock the ability to do prime weapons
Here's a screenshot of my Rank 9 if anyone's interested:
Does anyone on Bahamut have a Hoxne Earring that they can lend me? I want to see if Rank 9 gives me +30 or +25 to all stats. It's selling for 300M atm, and that's too rich for my blood.
I've done a lot of stuff in game, so I'm not sure what exactly pushes me over, but I'll try to answer what I can.
- I have done a crafting shield (Bonecraft)
- I've done a lot of Monstrosity. I have every monster unlocked, and most of them to 99. All of my vermin are mostly level 60, with the diremite at 70, and the spriggan and DQ slime are also at 60. The rest are all 99.
- I have a lot of titles. The only ones I'm missing are the two newest Master Trials, the Besieged titles, the Ballista Royale titles, the *other* crafting shield titles, Matchmaker (I play a male character- I guess I can get that now with the race change service), and the completely unobtainable ones from the .DATs.
- I have all of the relics (though not all ilvl yet), all the aeonics, and several mythics / empyreans. The list on my profile page looks to be up to date. I also have one stage 5 prime weapon.
- I have one ML50 job, and 2 others in the 40s.
- I've done all of the ROEs, missions, quests, campaign ops, etc.
- I do have V25 clears in Odyssey.
confirmed I am still rank 8 (made sure to zone after logging in to be ultra sure), so definitely going to say anything new is focused on the newer content clears/prime weapons/etc. Not sticking around long enough to see if clearing TVR all the way might help rank me up
also tried a mars orb and got mimic'd immediately, lol
and now to stay logged out for another two years or so
I just want to read the trials and tribulations of the new people throwing themselves into full game completion for a few more stat points. There's.... So much content, oof
People who don't normally do quests going title hunting and experiencing things like the tavnazia fisherman escort quest or other dumb ones just gives me a big smile

Yesterday I rode an Airship from San d'Oria to Jeuno on a Full Moon just for a title. NMs in low-traffic areas like Tiamat, Jormungandr, and Ash Dragon have been dead every time I have gone to check on them (*** asura). People are definitely sufferingexperiencing it.
I'm doing a quest in Carpenter's Landing that requires an item from monsters on the barge, and just learned there is an entrance to the Landing and Barge Pier from North Sandy. Over 20 years in and never knew this existed xD
Yeah, Monstrosity matters a lot for some reason. That's what pushed me from 7->8. Just max out as many as you can.
EDIT: Also, don't forget Chocobo Digging. That pushed me from 6->7.
Yeah, I've maxed digging and crafting and most other things possible. Several chocobos raised and dozens of race wins, etc.
The last two things I ever intended to "complete" in this game were the escutcheon spirit grind and the monstrosity species grinds, but I might have to reevaluate them now. I just find the latter so insanely boring as the most efficient way to level is spamming synced level 30 EP mobs or whatever was shared. It sucks the campaign is basically useless for extra EXP on it. I regret not taking advantage of the moogle ambu for it while it was up.
At the very least, I've been very lackadaisical over the last half year since I "already hit 8" and was slowly working on things with low motivation, and this kind of reinvigorated me to play more at least.

Would like to see this too - will put together something in a few days for a formatted post. I do have an escutcheon but still 8, so I'm gonna try to knock out a few more campaign ops since that's what ranked me up last time. I do have a 3 99 monstrosity monsters (slime) and something like 145/154 species unlocked.

I had a similar experience in Windurst in Heavens tower. For about 10 years, I just didn't know it had a basement. The depth of the zone is kind of weird, and the winding staircase down to the basement doesn't really stand out from a distance.
Also, Windurst sucks amiright? ...I'm just mad I have to go do the Windurst missions now for Mastery Rank increases. :(
IIRC I haven't done the Martello quests in Abyssea yet because they require that you restore HP and all Martellos sit around with full HP. Anyone have a way to do them?
I'm also interested in whether we have any rank 9s that haven't done most of the Master Trials. It always felt dumb that Master Trials weren't that important for Mastery Rank.

Yes.
Get yourself damaged by surrounding monsters.
Use the martello to restore your HP (this will lower the martello's total health).
Quickly do the "replenish martello health" before it regens above the threshold where it will be too high for you to complete the quest, done.
Easier if you have multiple characters to use at your disposal.
Can't spam it because there's a "cooldown". Once you've used a Martello you can't use another one for X minutes, where X is lowered by certain abyssites iir but I could be wrong.
I don't remember if this limits applies on a per-zone basis or per-martello basis, and I don't remember if zoning in and out of Abyssea resets the timer.
I was missing a few of them a couple of years ago when I maxed all abyssea quests and max reputation in a couple of Abyssea zones, and the one above is the method I used to heal the martellos in an era where pretty much nobody is in Abyssea zones.
EDIT: Also, don't forget Chocobo Digging. That pushed me from 6->7.
What is there to do in Chocobo Digging that gets tracked by the game? Other than the couple of available RoEs.
There's one that requires you to do 30 digging, something else as well that I don't remember probably?

Sounds like too much of a work (with an overly annoying UI from a 2003 game) for the likes of me, but I guess those hot and cold miniquests are nice.
No Greens required to dig, and they do give potential skillups and are not subject to the ~100 daily limitations.
Sooooo yeah, I guess very nice spot to start with for anyone who wants to do at least some choco digging.
I can provide some answers as I grinded my digging earlier this year. I had a couple hundred random digs before I started tracking every day (from things like Vanabout etc) but I won't include those in the total, just what I recorded.
I used a bird with enough END to get 200 digs a day, rest in DSC and RCP. I'd usually get 2~3 items per dig, doing all of them in West Ronfaure to make it as fast as possible (misses just meant extra time spent digging to hit the daily cap). About 20-30 minutes a day once dig delay was gone.
I used Sky Blue silks the entire time, and true to the wiki, the rate of messages about gaining skill was almost exactly 50%. Two of the months were on Hyper campaigns (which didn't really matter after the first three ranks) and one was with a skillup campaign.
Ranking up went fairly quick at earlier ranks and slowed dramatically by the end. I think I hit rank 5-6 in only a few thousand digs but a single rank at the end was taking more than that.
Anyways, it took me roughly 20000 successful digs over ~100 days to hit max rank and minimum dig delay. I had 1515 misses for an overall accuracy of 93%ish. I can't guarantee this will be the same for everyone, I went in expecting far worse because the wikis stated it would take years of digs. Dunno if they changed it at some point.
As for the Hot and Cold game, *** Buburimu. Seriously. The others took a bit, some days failed, most were success, but I literally had like a 10% success rate in that zone, the messages were useless. Might have been better if I had a bird with Treasure Finder at the time, but I didn't. I just picked up the six KIs and never bothered with the final zones.
I went in expecting far worse because the wikis stated it would take years of digs.
Same for me. I think it was probably always a bit overstated, but it's possible that the testimonies were from before Personal Chocobo (200 digs) + Sky Blue Silks (50% more skill per digs? who knows!)
It doesn't take long to knock out a day worth of digs after the first few ranks, so maybe you could cap chocographs and see if that gets you through the first few ranks, then just spam out your 200/day whenever you have time.
A few thousand successful digs *GASPS*
I'm already running away from Choco Digging lmao
Regardless of that, THANKS A LOT for the super useful information provided, hope someone will add that to the Wiki Chocobo Digging discussion page as it could be greatly useful for everybody in the future.
I also doubt the max ranking is required to unlock Mastery related stuff, probably need a couple ranks below the cap to be done with it.
For anyone that wants to share where they are with Mastery Rank and there stats on quest/missions/roe and so forth. Rank can be found in menu under Status>Profile.
Any data helps, but more data for people at rank 6 can help us find possible base requirements. Stats from other ranks also can find baselines for those as well. Obviously stats from people if they notice when they rank up will be extra useful.
Square Enix said:
Mastery Rank is a numerical value representative your completion of missions, quest, and various other types on in-game content. The higher the rank, the more you have completed. Source
The "other types of in-game content" might be hardest to figure out. Apparently at the moment Rank 6 is the cap?
Master Rank 4 with:
Rank 10 only in one city
Zilart/CoP main missions + epilogues completed
ToA/WotG/SoA/RoV main missions completed
No Addons done
451 ROE completed
Max Fame in Bastok, Windy, Sandy, Norg, Jeuno and corresponding linked areas
Relic/Empyrean/Aeonic completed, no mythics
