Are you the 80%? Or the 20? 20%, I dont think all that many people who are programmers professionally actually like programming (at least that seems to hold true at my company)

Reading the devs complains, most of them seems like burnout due to pressure than the job per se.
That together with non realistic deadline, and companys neverending desire for them to be "more productive" can speed up the burnout.
There is also the natural decay in interest after doing the same thing for years.
That said, i think if the same survey were applied to other jobs, probably it would have about the same result.

Also, kinda unfair the other guy saying hes happier after dropping programming to be a farmer.
Youre basically stopping being employed to be your own boss.
Maybe a good measure would be if freelancers would still prefer dropping that to become farmers

It's difficult for someone to objectively quantify, as it's tied to their literal survival.
Seems obvious, a person may enjoy (thing) until they have to do it (and more of it) under the duress of starvation, loss of insurance and home.

There's at least two types of programmers:
- people who picked up coding while teens/preteens and did it for fun, that once it was time to pick a job/career/school went the easy way - especially since there was significant money in it
- people who don't necessarily like the skill/aren't necessarily good at it, who went in it for the money
Second category never necessarily liked it in the first place.
First category turned a passion/hobby into a career and we all know how bad of an idea that tends to be. Even if you still like the skill and practicing it, everything else about the job sucks.
Me personally, I worked as a web developer for a little less than a decade, then worked as a security auditor for another decade, and now I run an arts school. The only programming I do is lua addons.
*** the entirety of the IT industry.
(I might be slightly salty.)

Imagine working for a company that hires loads of DEI people, who suck at their job and are only there to tick boxes for investment reasons. That you have to baby, and fix their mistakes all the time.
Then "everyone" decides to unionize and you're no longer allowed to work the hours you want, and don't even get paid for being good at your job cause everyone has to get the same money.
Farming sounds good.
We used to reward drive and excellence, those times are gone.

I would be completely interested in owning my own business if I already have the basics funding to not to live in poverty.
If my basic finantial needs arent covered yet, I would prefer working as an employee for the safety.
Unions are like soccer/football team. If its good or bad depend mostly about what side youre on.
Its publicly your position anti-unions, I hope youre at least a boss, and that youre a good boss for your employees
By Lili 2024-07-31 08:42:23
don't even get paid for being good at your job cause everyone has to get the same money.
Union contracts don't and can't prevent a company from paying you MORE than the others, what they do is prevent the company from paying the others LESS than what is agreed upon.
Now, no company WANTS to pay you more than they cat get the bare minimum away with, which is why unions are important.

Yeah but... if thew're paying the serfs more money, the can't gwow the business uwu
If we have to pay $20 an hour we can only afford 500 workers, but if we can pay $10 an hour we can hire twice as many people, isn't that the better answer!? Don't you want more people to have jobs?

That's definitely not accurate. I have a friend who's in the UAW and he's always been a huge proponent of unions. When he got his job he worked his *** off, taking every opportunity to learn and do more work. After 3 years of this he had maxed out his pay rate and would not be eligible for another raise until he passed his 8 year mark. So all of the ambition and drive he had was pointless since he would have just received those pay bumps for just existing and doing whatever job was in front of him.
Unions are amazing in theory, but in practice they are like any other governing body, corrupt and ran by people who want more power and money.

Everything is amazing theory, and dogshit in practice.
Humans are the problem. Every problem with every system that has ever or will ever exist is because a or a group of humans *** it up.
Prisoner's Dilemma, though there's no "dilemma", the answer is always "*** you, got mine".

The Achilles heel of unions are that there are no import protections, isn't it odd all these unions that have so much money and power don't seem to lobby politicians to create import protections from countries without good workers protections?
If you unionize, push up wages, reduce working hours and create worse products for consumers what is going to be the end result of that? The company will just close the entire office / factory in 4-5 years and set one up in China or India where they have to deal with none of that.
Almost everything we used to make is now made in China, there is a reason for that.

Do you like table tennis? As know here as ping pong?
I think fascinating how top players can consistently win when they are the better one in the match.
There isnt room for variance in those type of sports. The best is the best undisputed.
