Economy died - tariffs brought in on AH sales now
By Rooks 2025-02-16 15:01:29
Pretty sure I know what's up; looking into it.
By Rooks 2025-02-16 18:02:02
Pretty sure I have the answer; if someone from one of the affected servers (except for Phoenix and Leviathan) has Wireshark installed and wants to help me confirm something, please hit me up on Discord real quick. Thanks!

Scragg is putting the fix into production.
tl,dr on the problem: Square gave some AH servers new IP blocks during the last maintenance. I found the new ones (with a helping hand from Nifim) and the config is updated. Sales should catch up at some point shortly; if you see WRONG data somewhere please find me IMMEDIATELY.
Thank you!

Does SE block AH IPs because they cost them money or something?
By Rooks 2025-02-16 21:48:10
Sometimes (rarely!) SE moves hardware around during a maintenance and the AH server for a given world changes IP address. When I said "AH servers" above, I meant on their side, not ours.
Anyway, when that happens, I have to go find the new ones and point the scraper at their new homes.

I wonder what FFXIV server my FFXI characters are gonna wind up on tomorrow after this hardware maintenance. Maybe it wont even be FF, I might wind up logging on a DQX server next to a metal slime HNM!

I gave the Ragnarok AH server IP to Rooks, so may still be missing the other servers.

I have everything except Bahamut; there's always a pattern to these, but Bahamut is special because it's server ID 0 and might go a couple directions with the pattern. I'm going to just make a Bahamut mule tomorrow and find it then. Sorry for the delay.

New list has been sent off to Scragg; I'll let you know when it's updated. Sorry for the delay.

Shame this wasn't because they decided to merge servers. $18 per transfer is absurd pricing.

Since you guys are working hard on fixing the "important" stuff with the AH data flux, maybe you can find a time to do whatever it is you regularly do every now and then and that fixes the "Achievements" section from players' profiles? <3
By Dodik 2025-03-14 06:08:56
Counter proposal - delete guildworks, all achievements and all half broken integration with FFXIAH and XI so people will stop asking for it to be "fixed" every few months like groundhog day on steroids.
By Kaffy 2025-03-14 06:15:49
probably more effort than it's worth, but still a good idea to decouple it entirely and give it a proper goodbye
By Dodik 2025-03-14 06:19:16
Minimum effort is just removing showing achievements on the website.
No achievements to look at - no one asks for their virtual achievements in a video game to be fixed.

But then how will we know who has spent the most time or spent the most on FFXI gil anymore?

I'd try to fix it but I doubt I'd ever get source access

My concern with fan passion projects like this (non open source), is that they are given utmost care and concern for a few years, then the main people leave, they don't want to pass their baby off for one reason or the other, and it just turns to ***for everyone else who is still around.
I am truly amazed that AH has hung in for so long, despite being balanced on a very narrow needle for most of its life.
What happens when Scragg finally just has enough, what happens when Rooks (thanks for being a trooper) decides it's not worth the effort anymore?
PS. *** stanislav.

Most likely someone makes a new one. Even if they don't share any source, a good amount of people already know how to pull data from the game's AH servers and there are alternative projects with similar layout(Atom0s made a private server site with similar functionality at some point).
The bigger loss is the community, and at that point sharing source isn't enough. They'd have to be willing to hand off their domain, backend data, etc. I'm sure if a time comes when they want to get rid of it, that'll be considered.
My concern with fan passion projects like this (non open source) I get the value of open source, really. However, there are security concerns to it, especially with something as old as ffxiah. I don't think it's always in the best interest to open source things; though ideally there would be a backup or contingency plan in place in case Scragg has to abruptly disappear.

Scragg founded the site, what will be 20 years ago next year (HOLY HELL WE ARE ALL OLD!), and is still easy to get a hold of when he is needed. 20 year is over double the average length of a marriage.
Same is true for all the older devs from windower, and they have 0 active roles in the actual release of new code but still have information/access that randomly comes up once in a blue moon.
If the source for this site were open, people would abuse the AH to the point that SE might actually end the ability to have it. the AH team have been good stuarts of the access and mindful of what pushing it to hard might result in.
There was a super old post cliff made, in it he mentions how it would be easy to automatically create an "optimal" crafting page that shows you what to buy on the AH to maximize the profit of the synths and that they did not create that page because they did not want to give the site users and advantage over those who dont use the site. Not the path I believe many people would have taken given the opportunity.

Open source works if you have strong group of people who are all pushing for the greater good, if you don't have that then you just get a bunch of filthy savages taking everything people made and using it for their own selfish benefit.
The reason these things are still running in reality is the community around them, for the game itself the community being so passionate is what keeps the developers engaged and feeling responsibility to do so ( and so people like that JP voice actress that regularly holds community event streams and specifically invites the developers on voice chat, has done more over the years to keep XI running than pretty much anyone else https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJOADGclpSk because she makes it personal to them and keeps the developers engaged on an emotional friendly level) and similarly on this site the forum is why the entire site is still around. If you care about the functional site, you should post on the forum because this is integral to keeping the entire site around. For things like Windower and Ashita, if you care about them try to post on their discords to give feedback.
Ultimately all of these things are still around due to human interactions they have/see in relation to the thing they put work into. A thousand people using a thing in silence is far less rewarding to the people working on them, than 100 people using it and talking about/on it.

AH data for the affected worlds should be flowing again. Let me know if there are any more issues.
I'm sure we will get a third round of this at the next maintenance, there's still a chunk of servers left that haven't been moved. I've already got mules in place to check those servers ASAP so the delay will be a lot shorter next time.
