I've mostly finished up an public version of a gearswap tracker I've been using for some time. It's called ottoswap

Here's how it works.

Install the ottoswap-bridge addon, run it get a sync code -- and plug that into the website. That acts as your person directory for gear and the addon will hoover up all your gearsets, augments and some other things and ship it off. From there you're able to visualize, refine, and share everything online. Sync changes directly back to your gearswap luas in gearswap/data. No more out of date guides, just share entire sets with ls mates on discord or ffxiah. As it grows the community section will start to populate so you can see what other people commonly run for the same set.

here's a link if anyone wants to get a sense for how the sharing works https://ottoswap.ckmtools.dev/#u/NrPfBo-f (my sets).

Feel free to use, share, critique, support or throw hate if you think it's useless. I hope it's helpful to someone, sure has been to me :)

Note to those eager to try -- I have tested it to the extent of my ability so if you have issues or would like to report bugs, please do!

Since most setups are the same for windower (Windower/addons/gearswap/data/*) it goes and looks there. It'll take all the gearsets it finds there and post it via HTTPS . That sits in SQL and gets updates as you augment / get more gear. The only reason I collect it is because it's too expensive on the client to push per use and for me (I'd hit basically any free tier of whatever cloud service doing that) so I just dump it and diff as things change. Then when you wanna sync things back down, it updates the gearset.lua in place and pushes it backdown to the relative path it found it in.

As for your question "How do you use it". I sell it obviously. Do you know how many people are interested in buying your gearsets?

Pretty cool interface. Since you asked for glitches, I noticed that elemental resistance icons aren't displaying (not that it really matters, because the values are all the same on Warder's/Carrier's.

Exactly. The underground market for `sets.engaged.Accuracy` is absolutely booming. I’ve already got three shell companies, a Cayman account, and a buyer in Jeuno willing to pay top gil for badly augmented Nyame sets.

Thank you! The elemental resistances is actually already on my list. I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to actually get them from the game (similar to augments which are really really not straightforward). I'm going to look into it.

So Devs that use AI to streamline and increase productivity are all slop now?

Get out of the past and modernize. Where is your useful addon written on a punchcard?

Regardless of how it was developed the tool does as advertised and is useful for those that care. Go talk about your personal issues/beliefs aboit AI in the proper channel.

Code reuse is fine. AI code that's well-understood and has someone invested in keeping it up is fine.

Code without ownership isn't. If someone just creates something by feeding prompts until they get it to work (shockingly reminiscent of mobile game addiction mechanics tbh), they typically don't have any deeper understanding of the code or any personal attachment to the product. As a result, the project is not likely to be well-tested or maintained after launch.

Haven't looked into this product enough to know for sure, but the owner made a few posts asking for help to get the parts AI couldn't do. A week later they drop it here. A month later they haven't been back or added anything or done any follow-up. Seems likely it's abandonware, which is the default state of anything 'vibe coded' outside of a corporation.

Not sure what's happening here. AI is used everywhere in software engineering now. There are some people that are still resistant to it but the productivity gains are real when used right.
Vibe coding is not the same as using AI.
You're still responsible for understanding the code that is being generated as well as the architecture and design decisions. Vibe coders generate slop because they have no idea what the AI is actually doing.

That said, you are either high or immature. Leave Dodik alone lol. His post wasn't wrong.

I actually don't believe this is safe to run locally unless you trust this person. This is grabbing data from a server and sticking it in Lua. Lua is an interpreted language which means this CAN expose you to to arbitrary code running on your machine. Unless I missed something, there are no guards to sanitize the input. You can see that here.

This is basically security 101 and screams vibe coded with no understanding of how to actually protect a user from an attacker. This has nothing to do with AI itself and everything to do with how the user is using AI.

Did any one of the negative nancys bother to look up the author on his git? Dudes an ios app dev. (From a quick surface peek. Im not out to cyber stalk him and prove creds.)

My wheelhouse is not software dev anymore, but Ive kept in touch with it from a high level. Enough that nothing stood out to me as a security risk. Did I scan it before I did more than download it? Yep. Have I told anyone to scan everything they find on the web? Yep, every time.

What bugs me is the entire "ai slop" and "wtfbbq it might steal my data" but most folks dont bother to do anything but jump on the bandwagon. "Ai bad. Datacenters bad. Caveman go ugh" When the facts dont support it.

It seems more like you jumped in (a month late) to say "AI good. Datacenters good. Everyone else dumb." Again, I haven't read the project to state whether it's slop or not, but glaring security flaws and lack of ongoing involvement lead me to believe the categorization is probably fair. A project can be AI slop without all AI use being slop.

Him being an IOS dev(or claiming such on git) doesn't mean anything besides that someone hired the guy. He could be an amazing developer with a lot of cross-functional knowledge. He could be a great IOS dev with minimal skills elsewhere. He could be the fat that got cut from his last 3 companies. We don't know, and expecting us to judge the product based on the person who wrote it is silly anyway.

I only recently got turned onto the project (not from here). Apologies my RL obligations keep me from browsing the forums here with any regularity.(mostly sarcasm there)

The guy is active in his discord and hss already fixed issues I found and told him about. (In maybe 12 hours after I found it)

Dodork over here had nothing but "ai slop" to say. Something that apparently is his mo. Neither constructive nor quality. Conversely you and I are having an actual adult conversation.

I dont expect it to be judged by his history. Oes.it do what it says it does? Does it fill a need? Yes, and yes. Did you, or anyone else do more than a cursory inspection? Call it out if its a risk and you can back it up with facts. He even made a comment to someone today about a security risk...

Call it a crap product if use shows it to be garbage. Hello iceberg lettuce. Projects get shelved for a time everywhere in favor of something with a higher priority or profit. My aide gig has a huge 4k project that has a deadline into next year. I put it off for a few weeks to get a quick $300 thing done for someone else, it happens. My big project guy isnt going to pull it in favor of someone else just because I put his on hold...

Hey sorry if I somehow gave the impression I didn't know what I was talking about or don’t care about the thing I created. If there’s any reassurance I can give in terms of explanation of architecture or security happy to assist but to my knowledge it hasn’t explicitly been requested from me. Would you like an overview?

As for my absence — I don’t post on ffxiah too much you’re right. It doesn’t mean I haven’t been focusing my efforts elsewhere though. Sorry if from that you maybe inferred I don’t care enough to reply. I’m an open book!

As a matter of fact I was pretty skeptical about AI tools myself but once I was able to get past the mental roadblock I’ve come to really enjoy them. I didn’t ever openly contribute to any public addons (except for a few issues with battlemod maintained by icydeath and some small other things) but I assure you I’ve been writing quite prolifically for my own privately maintained addons since well before the general adoption of AI.

I’m well familiar with packet structure and incoming outgoing data, and Ottoswap is basically listening for changes in bags, sending character information like server and other small bits and packaging it out to a relay via cloudflare. To make the process of editing and onboarding easy for folks to didn’t like code to begin with, it reads up a few directories in addons/gearswap/data to package up and send to the relay as well. Writes back to those same files are entirely optional, because I know how sensitive writing back raw lua can be for some. It’s a feature available for those who want it and those concerned can simply download the new gearset and add it themselves!

Like I said if anything is requested of me I’m happy to provide what knowledge I have! Happy gaming you sweaty nerds

Good of you to call this out! I was cautious about this without trying to totally lose utility by neglecting it. I want it to be easy to use but players can manually manage their lau if that’s there choice. Plenty of buttons on the website to export entire sets or copy snippets per set to edit yourself!

One thing I loath is auth, so ottoswap just works with a pairing code. You have a private pairing code and a public code (used to identify yourself for your shared sets). The only way someone could spoof you is if they had your private code to use the sync functionality on the website. Changes don’t actually get sync’d do the game until you run the addon command //os pull . So unless that same attacker had access to run that command on your physical machine, no lua is ever sent. Totally happy to talk about this more if anyone has a better way to do this that doesn’t require auth or sacrifice utility!

Hey OP,
From someone who has been coding most of his life, and also works professionally with and without AI in the context of software development, I have some tips for you or anyone else working with AI.
  1. Don't get too attached to whatever AI builds for you. Let it build something, try it out, learn from it ...and then throw it away!

  2. Seriously, take your learnings from iterating with AI on something and let those learnings build until you have a really, GOOD grasp of what you want to build.

  3. After each prototype/thing that AI has built for you, extract/summarize that session as a text file. Have AI write a cumulative word document of the thing you want to build.

  4. Every session gets you a new text file of something you learned about the thing you want to build.

  5. Every session adds to your cumulative re-generated word document.

  6. With the text files and documents in hand, you will better understand the workflow that you're building for people (Even if AI writes the code).

  7. When your word document is ready, you can have AI build the thing you want in phases.

  8. When in doubt, see Bullet #1, throw the code away and start over with your documents (memories) to make improvements.

  9. If you care about the thing you're building, come back to it at a later time.

Totally agree with everything Thorny said, especially with how playing with AI feels like a gacha game or gambling addiction.

Agreed. Good code is code that is maintained. Today, it's mostly humans that do the maintaining. For better or worse, as time goes on, the machines will eventually maintain our code. We will only focus on the end-result of that code: the workflow, offering, benefit, or use-case etc...that will be the primary focus.

Anyone who says AI is automatically slop, just does not understand what a benefit this is to a number of strict disciplines (science, medicine, engineering, etc). Yes, AI is terrible for humans in terms of making art, music, and it's impact on the environment and even some folks' livelihoods. :(

My hope for AI, is that eventually, the good outweighs the bad, and that there is a safety net for folks who are displaced by new technologies. :(

(Also, if you're curious about what it's like to work in Tech, where the landscape changes constantly, and want to learn what you need to do, in order to be successful, then feel free to read this Medium post: Code Fossils: My Career Path Through Three Decades of Now-Obsolete Technologies

TLDR: I'm aligning myself with Thorny here. The only good code is maintained code. Technology will always change/shift, and humans have to learn to adapt to those demands.

If you don't believe me or want to gripe about it, here's a random list of 10 extinct jobs, written in 2014.
