Posting Real Life Information

Well someone mentioned in this thread someone looked up someone's RL info with just their IP. Let's just say that's not possible at this level.

But this is...

Search username/AIM SN/MSN Add/Skype UN Game tag etc... on Google, find Xanga, Facebook, Myspace, XBOX, PS3, other online forum or any game discussion BBS and usually you can cross reference said name to whatever account you find. Look for minor similarities, name formatting, English speech patterns, common interests, and maybe you'll even come across said person's real name.

From there it's simple, do a white pages / online residential record search for the name and the person's city, since we live in a world that isn't 'that' crowded yet, usually you get maybe 1-10 unique hits. And just narrow it down...

Not that hard, not that amazing.

In order to get real address with just an IP number, you'll have to subpoena his ISP for the records, something which none of us can do.

You don't even have to put your info out there for it to be. Every buy anything have bills in your name? Guess what that info isn't that hard to get.

Again, not the point. Involuntary information is usually only relevant to one subject. Knowing someone bought something is different than knowing who that someone is AND what he bought. We've established that information is easy to find already. The point here is people feel that the internet is safe through obscurity but when you post the wrong bit of information in one place, it can be tied to information elsewhere. That's where it becomes dangerous.

Not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing. Either way I just meant that if you want to find stuff out about someone it's not all that hard. Linking 1 thing to everything else not that hard. And if you don't have at least 1 thing then you aren't really searching for anyone or anything in particular

Anyway, like Princemercury described, tracking people on the internet is so easy it's not funny. However, it's also blatant stalker behavior, and shouldn't be announced when you've done it. You will scare the hell out of people, and it's just a bad idea. Instead, just order flowers/pizza with a nice card to their front door at 2 in the morning. Much more effective, and it stays between the two of you ^.^
