It's not like if you whoop a kids *** for starting a fight he's going to become very adept at creating robots...

Exactly.
Nail on the head.
to be honest I have less of a problem with somebody smacking their child out of reflex than I do with somebody beating their child ie: spanking, belt, whip etc
dunno why, but I just feel the latter is worse.

Bottom line is, you raise your kids how YOU see fit and others will raise theirs how THEY see fit. Your opinions do not matter in someone else's home.
yeah, I'll be glad when it's finally illegal and they come bust down your door for abusing children, I'd like that on COPS, would make my day.

Are you telling me there was no better way to get through to you than your parents unable to concede to their failures thus striking you? No really, that is how it works, when someone can not concede to their failures they resort to violence. Sorry you people were such idiots that you need to be whacked to understand something. How did learning math go then if that is the case? Did your parents put on JP game show host costumes and hit you in the forehead with a paper fan when you added incorrectly?
***. It's 2011 and time for resolutions and such, so I'll admit that I 100% agree with Spicyryan on this.
Nail on the head. When a human can not accept, comprehend, or appreciate his/her own failures, violence is a common outlet or result. It's a crutch, and a tool used by simpletons. Sadly, it can be an effective tool, at least in the short-term, since physical pain is noxious to most humans.
However, it breaks down to this: violence begets more violence, and two wrongs do not make a "right".
If you think corporal punishment is noble, proper, or quality parenting ... then you are an idiot, plain and simple.
If you "thank" your father for whipping you with a belt in your youth, then I truly feel sorry for you. You probably deserved much better.
/clap
So not only am I agreeing with Ellan, but I am agreeing with jet again? What the ***..
I know dude, we've got to stop this. It's madness.

***I passed out before I made any real point towards Darki... oh well
My point was I was spanked, etc. when I was young.
It did not encourage me to use violence more than my peers. And I most certainly could not use violence over the 14 years I volunteered, get paid, to watch other people's developmentally disabled children. Those kids had some crazy behaviors like biting, grabbing, screaming, etc.
So the violence breeds violence, I never saw it. (not in the case of spanking anyway)
Lower IQs? Please, I took AP calculus in high school. If only I had those possible +5 more IQ points I could have taken honors physics, oh wait I did. I'm not really sure how +5 more points could have helped me, my IQ is plenty high enough.

The research I linked indicates that spanked children tend to have lower IQ scores than similar children who were not spanked. It also indicates that there is an inverse correlation between number/frequency of spankings and IQ score.
So, what does this mean?
Does it mean every child that is spanked has super-low IQ scores? No. LOL @ the person in this thread that sarcastically quipped that he should have an IQ of 80 because he was spanked. More hyperbole from the basement dwellers.
Does it mean that SOME spanked children CAN NOT end up with higher IQ scores? No. Clearly, some people posting here about their spankings and subsequent academic success managed to be examples of statistical outliers. Bravo. That doesn't make corporal punishment ok.
The research indicates that ON AVERAGE, IN THE SAMPLE OF PEOPLE TESTED, children who received spankings had IQ scores up to 5 points lower than similar children who were not spanked.
Now, some people might say "big deal, 5 points". Yeah, well, maybe you haven't looked into admissions criteria for major universities recently. Do you really want to be responsible for your child not receiving college-prep courses in high school or not gaining admission to his/her college of choice, because they "just missed" the cut-off for said college's admissions, based on grades and test scores?
The difference between an A student and a B+ student is noticeable. The difference between an IQ score (or, by extension, and SAT or ACT or GRE score) of 105 and 100, believe me, it gets noticed by people who get paid to decide your child's educational opportunities.
So, if you spank your kid, it is LIKELY (not absolute; few things are absolute) that you're HURTING his/her chances in life. I know this is difficult for some of you to understand. Try harder. I definitely think there is a correlation between NOT getting spanked and resorting to name calling, as you and others have provided evidence of this many times, kudos.
I also love the fact that you use statistics of a study to prove your point, but call anything to the contrary an outlier or say we're not understanding what the statistics mean.

That's not the equation spanking=lower test scores. Too many extra variables there. Pretty much this.
Leviathan.Hohenheim said: Thirdly, being spanked isn't being beat. This seems to be the problem some people can't wrap their head around.
Which tells me that either they were really abused as a child or have been watching too many videos of parents abusing their kids.

Bismarck.Elanabelle said: Lakshmi.Anadosia said: First off, it depends on the kind of kid you have. It all depends on their personality. (I have two boys btw) My 1st child got spanked on occasion and put in the corner, grounded with extra chores as he got older. My 2nd child is a very emotional one and I know if I spanked him, it would emotionally hurt him to the core, so he gets grounded. What is also vitally important is if your children respect you as a parent and if they don't, you need to figure out WHY before they get older. All I have to do to my kids is give them the option. Either you can do what I tell you or this is your consequence and give them "The Look" which scares the crap out of them,lol...and 98% of the time, the choose to do what I tell them to do. Both of my kids are well mannered, behaved and have strong morals. Know your kids before you decide what punishment is right for them because everyone is not the same.
No, no, no.
While I respect your argument MUCH more than the guy saying that "it's irresponsible to not beat your kids", you're still mostly wrong.
While it's true that some children have "thicker skin" than others, you are STILL psychologically damaging your "tougher" child when you beat him. The fact alone that you seem to take some twisted sense of pride in how your kids are frightened by "your look" shows you're doing it wrong.
Children respect wisdom and love. Unfortunately, as you point out, children respect physical pain, too. However, if you have to use physical pain to earn respect, it's probably because you lack wisdom or can not or will not provide adequate love to the child to earn his/her respect that way.
The problem parents like yourself have is you don't realize that the negative psychological effects of your beatings are not always obvious or apparent, for years or even decades. It probably helps you to sleep at night thinking that you "needed" to beat your "tougher" child because that's his personality, but that's just a crutch, which serves to help you feel better, not the child.
If one beats his/her kids, s/he is causing them, and society, irreparable harm. It's fact, it's science, and it's common sense, too. If one is too insecure, too dumb, or too afraid to see this or admit it to oneself, then one is probably less than fit to be a parent. Sorry.
First off, I never said I beat my children. A swat on the behind and being "beaten" are two extremely different things. Oh and by the way, I never used a belt, switch or any kind of instrument except my hand since your being so technical. I would never, EVER inflict brutality on my children. You added things to my post that I never said.
