tried to go for other colors 1st, didn't like how it looked.
blond tones where not hitting the right spot
white hair wasn't too defined
red hair was too dark
light purple, didn't look as good as light pink.

Download Adobe creative suite 2 (it's free if you make an Adobe account)
Open Adobe ImageReady CS2
Import pictures or folders of photos freely (or other functional gifs to modify)
Convert them to frames of a single gif
Save as a new gif
I use Adobe After effects then render as png sequence, then gif it in photoshop.
