I'm so out of the loop. I pay zero attention to the news and I've been off all social media since 2019. This forum is my contact to the outside world.... God help me.

I always just assumed peoples dislike of Musk was because of Twitter, DOGE, and Trump. Musk was the GD hero of the left back in 2018, then all of the sudden he was the villian.

I hate this idea that anybody who doesn't think like you is the enemy. It's so toxic and we need to be able to discuss our disagreements, not silence/cancel/kill over them.

I stopped watching/reading news entirely during Covid lockdowns. That ***was depressing af.

Social media as a whole is a plague on society and the worst thing to be created by and for the internet since the original internet worm.

One of the great annoyances I have is that Facebook has largely taken the place of most forums for a lot of activities and replaced Craigslist for the marketplace. I'm pretty much only there for buy/sell crap and a few local groups that organize events.

I wouldn't be on it anymore if it wasn't for those two things. I pretty much just unfollowed most people I'm "friends" with and go straight to marketplace to find my next shitbox project on 4 wheels or groups to figure out what events are going on for said shitbox. All the posturing, flexing, and multipage long rants about politics are just so gross and annoying.

The marketplace is almost worth it, though. Someone had a F-14 simulator taken off the USS Yorktown for sale and I saw a Volvo with Cheetah print paint, a Corvette on 33 ATs, and seats (rows , so plural seats) from an American Airlines aircraft. The more I browse marketplace, the more questions I have about how people get this stuff and why.

It was also a huge organizer for rescue during Helene, people would post their location and get rescue within a day or so, they were also tracking the missing and helping people connect with loved ones, organizing supply needs, locating water/food sources and communicating it, etc. So it has its purpose at times, I just keep a low profile and do the above unless something comes up where it is necessary

You're right in this instance (I didn't check before), but it does ask for login most the time. Hardly ever click on those links.

Its not that deep. If I wanted to stir the pot, there are plenty of things of stuff today that would stir the pot a lot more:
Something in the middle east (i have nothing clever for this)
Open cmd and do shutdown -f
Link gets a shovel to dig for things in link to the past

There are still degrees to it, though. Having a glass of wine with dinner on a special occasion vs getting blackout drunk every Friday. Message boards have some elements of social media, but they're missing the algorithm-curated feed designed to make you angry and that's one of the worst bits.

I've heard that argument before, forums == social media.

I don't remember ever getting a notification on my phone that Nynja made a shitpost about something or other.

You have to actually go look for his shitposts. Which I do, but that is beside the point.

I dont remember Myspace having an algorithm based curated feed. Facebook didnt until it expanded well behind its initial purpose. Those were still social media.

Tell you what, when people here start posting half naked pictures of themselves, doing vainly disguised adult "cosplay" and having OF links in their bio, then it'll be social media.

That's the go-to these days, right?

I dont get notifications on my phone either because I turned them off. I look at my device at my convenience.

Social media panders to what you like and just gives you more posts from people who agree with you, forums be like, oh you like ff16? ff16 sucks balls and here is 10 pages arguing about it till topic bans

They just aren't as harmful as other social media. Still harmful, sure.
