You are absolutely right that some other artists like Mercury and John definitely are/were great talents, arguably better than Houston. The difference between them, however, is Houston wasn't gay herself. Generally when straight stars support the LGBT community, it hold more clout. But honestly, we'll take whatever we can get... just not Rick Perry.

It's not really open to interpretation. It is borderline insulting. Just because u don't approve of the conduct of a female in college doesn't reduce them as a lesbian or bisexual. Everyone's coming out and experimentation is different. As a gay man I dont judge lesbians or bisexual conduct, why? because im not lesbian or bisexual.

Also there really isnt a bad role model as far as support goes to the GLBT community. Because they are just doing that, supporting GLBT equality and civil rights.

E.g. U dont need to like Madonna's music or her as a person. But any person who goes out of her way at a concert to say "BLANK PROP 8" that gets a major thumbs up from the gay community.

The GLBT Civil rights movement isnt a contest as to who is better and who has done more. Every bit helps.

The heterosexist comment was assuming that because you have gay friends or know a gay person, you automatically know what's best for gay people.

Replace "gay friends" with "black friends" and see where that kind of statement gets you.

The biphobic statement was your brushing off someone else's same-sex sexual activity is somehow invalid is an assertion that sexuality is some rigid construct that one must ascribe to 24/7/365 and any deviation from a concrete label, whether it be identity-searching, questioning, experimentation, or whatever, is something to be disparaged.

Ever thought that maybe those LUGs actually participated in same-sex activity because they, you know, enjoyed it? And just said they were doing it for attention because it somehow "validated" the activity in the grand eye of society?

Either way, it doesn't matter. They have a right to participate in whatever sexual activity with whatever consenting person they want.

You're not insulted by girls who, after a stint of Power Hour or Kings, take advantage of the fact that they're surrounded by guys and make out to get guys' rocks off? Really?
